Don't complain about other people's sadness.  That's not fair to them.  They've come to us for help and you're just telling them you don't care.

Re: we can't help you

Touchy topics like those it depends on the content in it.

Sometimes people need a place to talk someone who may have recently died (like the Steve Jobs topic since he was considered to be a monumental figure in the tech world). One could give similar reasons for when they need some consolation for when a family member has died, or when a beloved pet has died, where the Scratch community can offer sympathy for what has happened.

Suicide topics on the other hand, are extremely touchy. If a Scratcher is posts a thread about committing suicide or expresses extreme depression where it's rather disturbing, then usually those types of threads get closed - closing those types of thread might looks insensitive, but in reality, Scratch is really not the best place for talking about it or for getting help about it. In response,  mods or admins (whoever is on at the time) will leave a comment directing the user to a place where they can be encouraged to get help, better than what the Scratch community could do alone. ^^

Agree wholeheartedly (:

@cheddar - So I'm not allowed to share my feelings through Scratch? I've had counseling and spoken to people in real life about my feelings. However sometimes people need a different way to express emotion other than by talking to family or friends. Scratchers are basically strangers and have no prejudgements as they've never met you. This means they can give you good advice regardless of your gender, age, or location. I like that about this community.
I think it's better to hear from people our own age who can relate, not a ST member or mod.

If you don't want to hear depressing stories about suicide or Jobs, then it's a good idea to skip over them like we did with Minecraft.

I never said anything about wanting to share feelings on the Scratch Forums in my original post. I was referring to extreme cases such as those where a Scratcher is thinking of things like suicide.

While it is good to hear from people our own age, the Scratch community isn't really no good substitute for a guidance counselor, especially when it comes to extreme cases such as suicide threads or extreme case of depression that suggest a suicidal tone (not even the Scratch Team knows how to deal with that very well, which is why mods and admins refer the user to those who they know can help).

On the Internet, you can never tell if the person is already going through some sort of counseling or treatment. And even if they are, the Scratch community (or ANY online community for that matter) is still not a good place substitute for getting the help and support needed through severe matters like that. If you want, you can contact the Scratch Team here if you need further explanation on the issue.

Yeah, but if they have, and still need help, we should help them.  They come to us for a reason.  They don't ask for help just to mess with our minds.  Besides, they have no reason not to ask for our help.  I agree with TDD.  It's good to get help from other people your own age.  They've come to us for help and it would be bad to say, "Nope, you're wrong to feel the way you do and come to us for it."

It's also wrong to say "we can help you even if we don't know how to help you"; not only that, it can even be dangerous because there's no one here with the knowledge of how to handle the situation best, so we're really not helping them at all. That why suicide thread or threads with extreme serious matters are closed with redirects to sources that can help (such as a suicide hotline, for example) - in other words, it's better to say "we don't know how to help you, but we care for you so let us point you in the right direction to someone who can help you better than we can".

Of course, there are less serious topics where people can provide support on (like giving empathy when a person dies, for example). Never did I say that discussing feeling wasn't allowed, let me make that clear (again).

I am just referring to very serious cases like earlier stated (did you read my original post? I stated that it depends on the content in the thread; not all threads are closed). I am just solely referring to threads with content where none of us are in the best position to handle the situation. You will noticed that some thread are left open where mods and admins keep an eye on it (and will close it if it gets too volatile) whereas others (like a suicide thread) are closed right away.

Although it is a very noble effort to try and help a person in that situation, you can't assume that just because you are doing it out of good intention, it will not cause the opposite effect. Those who are not specially educated to handle such situations can easily cause further harm to the person. Additionally, such topics are very vulnerable to troll attacks.

We want to prevent Scratch from being a source of potential harm to anybody.
