Can somebody help me?

How can you tell in Physics and Geometry which is the adjacent side and which is the opposite side?

Re: Can somebody help me?

Adjacent means it's actually touching the angle, where as opposite means that you can draw and see a line between the angle and the side.

Re: Can somebody help me?

AB3 answered it.

Adjacent side is any side next to the angle/side.

Opposite side is one that isn't directly touching the angle(/side?).

These terms are usually for triangles.

2 and 4 are opposite
and so it 1 and 3 are also.
2 and 1 are adjacent
1 and 4 are too
4 and 3 is too
and 2 and 3 are

Debate time!

In reality, the less you think, the smarter you are. Sounds weird right? But its true, because everytime you think, do or say anything, brain cells die. Of course, there are a few exceptions, and it doesn't really matter because only 100 of about 1000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000+ die.

Re: Can somebody help me?

Those terms are usually used when talking about the sides of right triangles (triangles where one of the angles is 90 degrees).

Adjacent means "next to"

Opposite means "on the other side of"

The side opposite the right angle is the longest side and it's called the hypotenuse.

If we want to identify the other two sides, so we can use them to calculate stuff (trig functions usually) for the other two angles that are not right angles, we can note that the hypotenuse side will make up one side of the angle.  Of the other two sides of the triangle, one will be right next to the angle (adjacent) and the other will be way over on the other side of the triangle (opposite).

Maybe this method will make it clear:  For the angle you are interested in, imagine a bisecting line that splits that angle exactly in half.  Extend the bisector line until it hits a triangle side.  That will be the opposite side.  The other side, that is not the hypotenuse, will be the adjacent side.  Hope that helps!
