Pretty much, yes. IE was so baked into the operating system that there was no way to actually remove it, and doing so caused Windows to effectively stop working, because Windows explorer was built around it.

And yes, there are no "windows" in the old sense in the new UI. However, you'll notice you can still view programs next to each other. It may or may not work out, but remember that every time someone made big change in the past, people grumbled about how different it was, but here we are using those changes today perfectly fine.

Well, you can't have 5 windows next to each other like this. And no quick Alt + Tab to switch windows either.
I've spent years memorizing shortcuts, and now they want to get rid of the keyboard. ^^

Really it never will... have you ever tried doing anything on a touchscreen? HP all-in-ones are the worst computers in the world!  Oh well... I'll have to switch to linux or mac when windows destroy their OS...

@16skittles: You're right, it should be "Windows" 8, not Windows "8." But it's true that  it's only the 8th version Windows NT-based OSs, not the 8th Windows OS, so the title should be more like "Windows" 8/Windows "8."

I believe Windows 8 is just a working name, and they're going to call it something else when they actually release.

But how is this anything like iOS? Because it uses a minimalist interface with mostly full screen apps?  If anything, it's closer to a version of WP7 optimized for larger screens and a more powerful desktop environment. Nothing like this has been done with a desktop OS before, so I'd say MS is taking a huge risk and really doing something new here.

No, I heard somewhere that Windows 8 will have "apps" and an app store, and all the apps are in a specific format the way the iPhone apps are. What that means is no Scratch or any other exe files.    And-

Exactly. Everytime someone makes a major change in the way we use an operating system, it's dismissed as though it will never work and the old way is so much better. Then 10 years later everyone can't imagine it any other way. And then the cycle repeats.

Very true, yet don't you think it slightly ironic that Windows is doing away with the windows feature? Granted it is all fancy with touch screen and everything, but do you happen to have a touch screen monitor? Because I don't. I know they said on the video that it would work with a mouse, but they never should that. Plus he mentioed thumb controls, does this mean that it's all going to be inside one case? Or maybe a wireless screen? Or a touch screen thats wired to a tower?
