It's fifth grade, Pecola. It's to experience dating and learn how it works. Everyone has/has had some type of childhood crush.
Right now, she LIKES him so why not?
And I'm going to go ahead and tell you: it's basically just something for the people at her school to gossip about. (Gets your rep up. *wink* *wink* 
) xD It's not like they're going to go to the movies or go for dinner anytime soon.
