Ah a png image gets converted to low level jpeg and also losing the transparency init . trust me i dealt with that problem alot
a jpeg with 100% quality will be equivalent in quality as .png but wont lose semi transparency .. as it just wont have it 8-)

Find the file in Windows Explorer. Let's say the file name is "scratch.gif" Change the "gif" to "bmp". This may result in a little bit of color loss so have a backup image.
