Taking your point seriously, technically, you can play the trumpet with just the mouthpiece.  We have to do that sometimes.  You can play all the notes, it's just more difficult and more wheezy sounding.

Can you do that with an oboe?  (Not a sarcastic question)

I don't play oboe lol.

But you can take the mouthpiece and a short neck piece off a clarinet and play a high pitched but changeable note.

GO Trombones! No reeds, plus glissandos!    You can play it with only a mouthpiece, or everything but the mouthpiece. You can play it with only the slide. You can play it with everything but the slide, but that kind of defeats the purpose of trombone, eh?

I know a drummer and he does a lot more than "tap on wood" lots of people can't even move their hands that fast...but the saxophone is the best instrument of all.
