Well that's a Christmas oddity.

I've recently learned that originally, Christmas had absolutely nothing to do with Christianity or Jesus Christ.  Not a thing.  In fact, there have been two separate Christmas holidays, both of which had nothing to do with even religion.  The Church of England actually disapproved of the holiday entirely, and literally canceled it some time before the 1800's.

The only reason Jesus was implemented into it was because ministers who did not approve of secular Christmas decided to make it more religious so that it would not be blasphemy to take a day off.  But this was long, long after the holiday was invented.

Note:  Please do not start a conversation on religion, just talk about this strange fact, or other strange holiday facts, or whatever.  Just no religious flaming.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against any religion, and this thread does not approve of any religion over another.

Good idea.  Even if you'd proven me wrong instead I think it's a good idea to let this drop.

@littletonkslover:  It is I guess, because this is a bit more speculation, but facts are facts.

Re: Well that's a Christmas oddity.

Actually this is incorrect. Christmas was started waaaay before 1800. It was based on the Winter Sulces (SP), which the Pagans celebrated. Its always had to do with Jesus.

I never said it started in 1800.  I said it happened long before then, but was literally canceled before the 1800's.

And no, it did not originally have anything to do with Jesus.  The very fact you used the word "pagan" shows you agree it did not deal with Christianity.

(To those who do not know, "pagan" means in its most basic form polytheist, but has more connotations than that.)

Re: Well that's a Christmas oddity.

It was originally the celebration of the Roman winter solstice, and the Sun was considered "reborn". The celebration of the Nativity of Christ was chosen to be placed at this time probably because it was exactly nine months after March 25th, which is supposedly when Jesus was conceived, as held by tradition.

Of course we'll never know when he was actually born. All we know was it was 2010 years ago.

I thought he was born in 4 B.C. due to calendar issues.  Eh, I may be wrong about that.  But the rest you said is correct.

Well, that's an interesting theory.  But I don't see how a holiday with "Christ" in it's name originally had "nothing to do with Christianity or Jesus Christ".  That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Can you point us towards your source for this information?

Of course, there were Pagan celebrations around the Solstice that predate the birth of Christ.  But they wouldn't have been called Christmas.
