Wait, I am confused. What was the new project/account that got banned. Also, I never did see why he was banned in the first place (Then again, my attendence on the forum has been lacking lately...)

So, anyone wish to explain what got him in trouble in the first place, beyond the simple being a troll?  tongue

I didn't think that anyone who could figure it out would be offended by it. But perhaps you're right, it is a little mean.

Jonathanpb wrote:

I know RHY as a friend, and I don't think he's nearly that manipulative.

All I want to know is what exactly RHY said to the team (direct quotes would be nice). If he did actually say he wouldn't be respectful then okay, if he didn't then...well, what's the reason to keep him banned?

Don't get me wrong, I understand being staff of a huge community like this one is hard, and outbreaks of drama like this one can only make the job harder. Of course the "right" decisions won't be made 100% or even 90% of the time, and I don't expect them to be either. And I also understand that in the end it's your site, you guys own the server and you provided us the program for free, and gave us these forums and this community. And I don't want to sound ungrateful towards that, but I mean, if a decision is unfair and the majority of the community seems to agree, why keep on supporting it?

It's not like you couldn't just ban him again, this time permanently without any chance of being reinstated, if he screws up again on his second chance. There is a clear rationale behind that, and you even have this topic in public view to support that, if you do choose to go that route, yes you gave him a second chance, and he failed it. But the circumstances behind the original ban are looking increasingly opaque and vague to me. Maybe I'm biased because I regularly talk to the guy but idk.

(offtopic) @ Bobby500: dude I haven't seen you since like years ago, you're the guy who made those Scratch Awards right?

This seems like a fair solution to me as well. Although I trust the Scratch Team, I do not believe RHY would go out of his way to lie about something like this when talking to a friend. It is quite possible there was a misunderstanding between the two parties that lead to this controversy, which has since blown out of proportion.

I think maybe RHY should be unbanned from the main site, but stay banned on the forum. Was he only disrespectful on the forums, or was he on the main site too?

Re: The TOU on Scratch boil down to this: Don't be mean

Blade, I deleted your post in accordance with our policy of respecting users' privacy. The user that your post mentioned probably didn't want its contents spread across the forums.

Listen, I don't pretend to know Rhy, and I certainly don't have the entire story, but based on what I've read I see two outcomes of this situation. There may have been a miscommunication between him and the Scratch team, and they can work it out. On the other hand he might not want to return or is unable to adhere to the TOU and will continue to be banned, which doesn't seem likely in light of what S65 and Blade have said. Either way, the specific details of his ban and his communications with the Scratch team are, IMHO, private between those two parties.

We want to make sure people trust us when contacting us. We want people to know we will not share the content of the messages they sent to us privately. For that reason, we want to keep the communication between us and any member of the community private. If RHY or anyone else want to make those messages public, they are free to do it. However, we don't think it's appropriate for us to do it. Since you know RHY, you can ask for the specific messages we have exchanged.  Ultimately, people can always doubt the existence or the manipulation of any message is posted online. Digital information can be easily altered or fabricated, reputation is one of the few things that can only built over the course of time.

Again,  to reiterate what we have said before. After blocking RHY's account for the first time, we asked, as we always do in these cases, to contact us, to agree to follow the terms of use and be respectful. In this case we did not get an agreement to do so, hence we decided not to unblock the account. As simple as that.

We do listen to the community. We keep things as democratic as possible. In fact, I'm often the one that push for this more than anyone else in the Scratch Team. Many things are decided by the community, from sections on the front page to moderators on the forums, to suggestions for future improvements to Scratch.

However,  ultimately we are the ones who decide what we want to do with the website and what type of behavior we want to support on this site.  We do not make our decisions about blocking or unblocking of accounts based on what the community wants. After all, world history has shown us that sometimes terrible leaders can be elected by the majority.

We do give second chances. Many people have gotten their accounts blocked, and then after reflection, they come around,  agree to be respectful and follow the Terms of Use and get their accounts unblocked. We do this all the time, but we only do it when we get clear and sincere signals that convince us that things will be different in the future. Of course, as many things online, there is always uncertainty so we often assess each case by case differently and as efficiently as possible. This happens every single day. We have had thousands of people whose accounts were  blocked contact us and gotten their accounts unblocked. Many of you have experienced this (feel free to share your thoughts if you are one of these people).  This is how we have a thriving community today with more than 600,000 members.

In this particular case we never received any signs of change, in fact, quite the opposite we got clear signals of rejection to the invitation to treat others with respect and kindness.

There are more than half a million accounts. There is no reason why we would we care to  block one account more than any other. And ultimately we all are working on Scratch for the love it. Scratch is not a for profit company, we do care about pleasing advertisers or to get people to buy anything.  We do have limited time and resources, so we try to establish processes that we think make the best use of those resources. Our main goal is to have a welcoming and friendly community for everyone and we do this to best of our abilities.
