Basic info:
Obama is challenging middle schoolers to create an educational video game, with big prizes! We can use any game design platform including Scratch!
Prize:
Something from a $50,000 prize pool, not $50,000.
Eligibility:

The Youth Prize is open to all students in grades 5 through 8 from any US school (including international schools operated by the Department of Defense). All students entering the contest must receive grade validation from a teacher, school administrator or parent.
It seems to indicate that they want students attending American schools (either in the U.S., or overseas). I think American schools established outside the US might be included; I think you probably might not be able to enter unless your school was US-based institution.

Hopefully, that sums all the basic info up. If you'd like more info, post, and we'll try to help you.
Will you be entering the contest?

It doesn't need to be an amazing game, I'm sure- just try your best!

Awesome!
I'd enter, but entrants have to be in the US D:
However, we have something similar here in the UK, but it's focused on animation, instead of games. It's called something slightly different every year - in the 2009 competition, it was "Animation09", the 2010 contest (which I entered, and uploaded the rather badly animated project to one of my other accounts here... My French pronunciation was awful there, and it sounds weird to me now Dx I did it in French because it was my MFL teacher who told me about the contest), was Animation10 - and the 2011 contest will probably be Animation11. You can use a variety of softwares - from what I recall, it's Flash, Scratch, Greenfoot, Alice, and possibly more...
Just throwing something in there if you're from the UK and looking to enter a competition similar to this ^^

I might try this for Gods Quest 3, I'll have to look deeper into this to see. Thanks for providing this interesting link

I might also try making a new game on the theory that originality wins points and GQ3 isn't entirely original
, I'll keep everyone posted if I decide to try this. It is a little irritating that this website seemingly provides so little information
(Sorry for the double post)

Yeah, the website could give a little more info. Remember- the game has to be educational in some way!

Isn't the educational part only for the Developer prize?
Read it again.

I saw that site, it just didn't seem to supply a lot of information about what the game should be like.
And you say it must be educational in some way, but all I saw it was "Submissions will be judged on a combination of fun and balanced gameplay, creative vision and incorporation of STEM concepts in game design and play experience."

Inspired by the Educate to Innovate Campaign, President Obama’s initiative to promote a renewed focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, the National STEM Video Game Challenge aims to motivate interest in STEM learning among America’s youth by tapping into students’ natural passions for playing and making video games.

Not good? You can practice a lot, the prize is $50,000 dollars, I believe.
I don't need 50'000 dollars. Okay maybe I do
But I would rather not steal from American tax payers. The 50,000 is most likely tax payer money.

I'd tend to agree there, but I think Obama's only supporting it.

I'll definately consider this
Now, just to create an original game...
