Why won't you get flash? You're missing out on a lot.
why won't we get flash? because most people on scratch don't have $700 in their piggy bank, that's why. Flash is awesome, but I think that it's horribly overpriced we made flash websites in industrial tech class. and yes, ona mac. why wouldn't it work on macs?
If you're a student - which most people on this website are - you can get it for about $170
Indeed Flash (among other things) can be obtained at a fraction of the original price if you show off a valid student card at the register... still then, sometimes even a few hundred dollars is pricey for many people; this usually true in the case for college students who end up having to pay hundreds of dollars in book bills initially, leaving very little to spend on other things. For people like me, I just keep the installer for the demo, and then uninstall when the 30 day trial is over, then reinstall it again. No point in me shelling out a few hundred buck for a Flash program which I used for only one semester.
But I'm getting rather off topic (this about Scratch in Flash, ne? ).
It's hard to say whether or not the idea of using Flash is a totally bad thing, as no one here really knows for sure how Flash is going to be incorporated into Scratch.
I do recall seeing a thread about Stencyl by Scratch user Jon914, which seems to incorporate ideas from Scratch and Flash, but perhaps the Scratch Team has something quite different in mind. It certainly would be great to hear what plans the Scratch Team has in terms if using Flash (if they have one. I recall that the Scratch Team has said the idea of using Flash is not quite definite or sure), before suddenly jumping to any big conclusions. After all: how in the world can we say if Flash is bad for Scratch if we have no idea how Flash is being used with Scratch in the first place?

Very good reasoning, I didn't realize that you could do that with the trial version, normaly, as my dad says, it runs home to mummy. Basicly it tells Adobe that it has been installed and it won't let you install it again afterwards. But anyway, Stencyl was a good idea, but its not really my cup of tea, I found it to limiting. And yes, how can people complain about it when they haven't tried it or know what its like.

I agree. I like scratch the way it is. And I don't like flash - it crashes my computer. Also, I don't know what mods are. But if they're like projects - if they're something somebody worked hard on, we don't want them to be in vain, do we?

I still don't understand what people are thinking about this. installing scratch 2.0 won't delete the files for panther, or any other scratch mods. they just won't 1.) be in flash and 2.) have updates from scratch 2.0. they just have to program those features in! also, scratch mods are programs like scratch, that have been modified (mod is shorter) so they have new blocks and other new features.

Whatever. You can have flash scratch but I'm staying with 1.4.

I'm sure you'll still be able to use 1.4, and will probably still be able to upload from it. Nobody ever said 1.4 will be "uncool."

yeah-my old school still used scratch 1.3, and I uploaded my pong game from it.

I think his or her concern was that since this would be a full rewrite that will probably be compatible with all Flash-compatible computers, the older "generation" of programs might not be supported. It makes sense to have that concern...

I happen to say that the team that made Panther and Streak and BYOB and Peck and the rest of the modmakers all those join up and assist with Java programmers to update the ScratchApplet, then a COMPLETE REWRITE 1. wouldnt be neccesary, saving a lot of work
and the modders would have to switch out and watcher Panther 1.1, Byob 3, and the other hard-worked mods dont turn into the pile of trash.
And the idea that Scratch working online? Thats asking to kill some computers. Squeak might not be able to work online, but ppl like NXII jens and all those people i know who are pros at Squeak may be able to reincarnate Mesh and Networking Squeak for use.
SqueakPlugin:
Have students at home use it, and explain it isnt a virus which unzips OMG.app or OMG.EXE and OMG.DLL and RUNANDDESTROYCOMPUTER.reg
Scratch Team, you are saying this:
I give up. Lets do something easier cause people know it more, and its convient to write ONCE YOU KNOW IT (i assumed, i pray you arent )
And Offline Editing is convient enough. If you cant download for some reason (you were banned) then you just failed that test but well, a complete rewrite is NOT NECCESARY.
List
Pros:
Online Edit
More detailed images
Pixel counting
Cons:
Computer Death
Flash will make mods have to be rewritten
New languages for mods and 'noobs' have a harder time learning
Slower Running will have a huge effect (based on RAM And your hard drive)
THE LANGUAGE IS TOTALLY DIFFRENT AND SMALLTALK IS EASIER TO FIGURE OUT!!!
THE LAST UBERCON:
FLASH COSTS MONEY TO EDIT SO MODMAKERS ARE SCREWED OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I support not remaking!!!
[Off-topic] A Complete addon to the applet would mean that they could lift the ban on mods and just make add-on sites for mods...... rather than have a complete new site! )
Ive made my point i think.

Flash probably won't be slower. Scratch is an interpreter on top of an interpreter, which naturally makes it slow. We won't have that problem with Flash!
Although mods won't be able to be made anymore, I don't think that is a huge issue. Plus, for those die-hard mod fans, they can continue to use the mod program normally! Putting Scratch in Flash won't change Scratch 1's source code!

Hey guys-
just to let you know, flash Scratch is working beautifully.

Flash is the final decision, and a little bird told me it is all working very well.

Computer death? *? There'll be an offline version.
Actionscript 2 is waaaaaaaay easier to figure out, 3 I'm not so sure.
Flash does not cost money to edit, it costs money to buy flash CS4.
What "new languages"
Mods can carry on, they're mods. They don't have to be in flash.
Most of your points make absolutely no sense.

Sorry guys, but Scratch is not being made to be modded. That is out of the question...
