But what if a four-year-old turns off the filter secretly, and sees inappropriate stuff? This site is for kids, so a flagging system is necessary.
Not many people knew how to turn off the filtering system on their internet at the age of 4

The four-year-old could find the switch, wonder what it does, try it out, and BOOM, no more filter.
Off topic: I would just put an electric shield over it. Ha! That would teach him

It's the parent's fault if their child finds something that they consider inappropriate for not putting filters on or not checking what their child is doing. And besides, every website is technically allowed for children because not many people tell their real age.

Well, isn't that kind of inappropriate!!!!!!!!!!! Electrocuting a 4-year old. That's child abuse. If your anti-inappropriate, don't be inappropriate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do think freedom of speech is important and I am certainly not angry with you.
But, Eminem is a bad example for your cause because he is not the internet and he is not a network for people of many ages. On scratch there are younger kids. In order for scratch to get bigger, they need people no matter what age. If it's not a clean community, people will discourage joining.
Anyway, if you were jewish and saw something hailing the nazis on scratch, that would be extremely offensive and thats not okay on a website with kids of these ages.

Freedom of speech is irrelevant in this instance.
Freedom of speech is about the governemnt having no right to silence you in public.
It has absolutely no bearing on whether a private website can choose or not choose to protect its younger members from profanity or inappropriate material.
Scratch is for kids, and so the site operators have made the perfectly natural decision to limit inappropriate material - as is their right. They are not curtailing your freedom of speech, as you are still quite able to go elsewhere on the web and post whatever you like.

This topic is somewhat edgy, so posters should be careful when joking around. But so far the discussion has been respectful. As long as it stays that way, we can leave it open.

That's what I thought. You can use a filter. That way, older scratchers can be happy with themselves and parents and younger scratchers can have the filter on to protect themselves.

Listen. If a kid turns off the filter he has to face the consequences. Second. You can't just shield a kid his entire life. Thats like never letting a kid out of his moms basement until he dies.

It is not limiting your freedom of speech. By joining this website members agree to be bound by the Terms of Use. It's an agreement, lol. ^^

So there's a long history of discussions about this issue that you all might find interesting. Exactly how far should freedom of speech extend? Should you be able to shout "fire" in a crowded movie theater, even though there is no fire, and people are likely to get hurt in the stampede to get out?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shouting_fire_in_a_crowded_theater
I think the issue of Free speech is not clear cut - it's difficult, and we are often forced to make compromises. If we are to make sensible compromises, we must understand all sides of the problem.
So that's why I'm glad to see this issue being discussed respectfully. That's important.

That rapper is not the same as the scratch website.
The rapper did not make music for little kids. MIT DID make a website for younger kids. Young kids listening to innapropriate music? The kids and parents fault, yes. The parents shouldn't let the kid listen to that stuff. A kid going on a website that is CALLED kid friendly, just to see that there is no flagging system, where people can post absoloutly ANYTHING on it? Not going to happen.
Basicly, in math terms:
Kid + Bad Music = Parents at fault
Parent + Letting kid on website that = kid friendly - flagging system = Website at fault
Website + Good flagging system + kid = Nobody at fault = everyones happy
Or, think of it like this.
The website is said to be good, but has innapropriate stuff. This is a public lie. Its not the parents fault for letting the kid go on that, because it says its appropriate. That means the website is bad.
The website is said to be bad, and is bad, but the parents let the kid on. Not the websites fault.
Find another site for that kind of stuff

I hate how sometimes I'll post a comment with no inappropriateness in it at all, but the system will automatically delete it anyway. They need to get rid of that "the system considered it inappropriate automatically" [word removed by moderator].

^^^ This. You can make an inappropriate project, post it on Scratch, and before it has any views, put it on a different website. Then, delete the copy on Scratch. TADA!

Well actually kids are the people that listen to Eminem the most sadly, and their parents don't know about it.

Similar to deviant art, or so I've been told.

I do not understand what you mean by that.

listen, it IS the 4 year old's fault if he turns off a filter. besides, four year old's wouldn't know what a filter is and kids are bad enough nowadays it wouldn't make a difference.just because a few people are offended, does not mean that everyone is. frankly, if you want to spend your time complaining about something on a website that's a waste of time. there are more important things in life than complaining. try it. you'll see. you should NOT care whats on a website.there is plenty worse things than language.
P.S. eminem is an awesome rapper.

I think you're the first person on here who agrees with me 100% about this.

At your first point, you guys are the ones complaining, are you not? Let me just add you to my hypocrite list.
At the second point, I should not care what's on this website because there's plenty worse stuff than language? Who said language is the only thing that would appear. Projects could have all types of inappropriate stuff. Also, with inappropriate projects, comes a worse community. Say bye to the age of innocence and hello to the age of trolls, and spammers reining Scratch, putting people down and just being plain mean. This site would turn into a second YouTube. Horribly inappropriate content, featuring videos with bad things, horrible members of the community. I believe no one wants this for Scratch.
