Freedom of speech is irrelevant in this instance.

Freedom of speech is about the governemnt having no right to silence you in public.

It has absolutely no bearing on whether a private website can choose or not choose to protect its younger members from profanity or inappropriate material.

Scratch is for kids, and so the site operators have made the perfectly natural decision to limit inappropriate material - as is their right.  They are not curtailing your freedom of speech, as you are still quite able to go elsewhere on the web and post whatever you like.

That's what I thought. You can use a filter. That way, older scratchers can be happy with themselves and parents and younger scratchers can have the filter on to protect themselves.

It is not limiting your freedom of speech. By joining this website members agree to be bound by the Terms of Use. It's an agreement, lol. ^^

So there's a long history of discussions about this issue that you all might find interesting. Exactly how far should freedom of speech extend? Should you be able to shout "fire" in a crowded movie theater, even though there is no fire, and people are likely to get hurt in the stampede to get out?

I think the issue of Free speech is not clear cut - it's difficult, and we are often forced to make compromises. If we are to make sensible compromises, we must understand all sides of the problem.

So that's why I'm glad to see this issue being discussed respectfully. That's important.

I hate how sometimes I'll post a comment with no inappropriateness in it at all, but the system will automatically delete it anyway.  They need to get rid of that "the system considered it inappropriate automatically" [word removed by moderator].

The website is said to be good, but has innapropriate stuff. This is a public lie. Its not the parents fault for letting the kid go on that, because it says its appropriate. That means the website is bad.

Find another site for that kind of stuff.

^^^ This. You can make an inappropriate project, post it on Scratch, and before it has any views, put it on a different website. Then, delete the copy on Scratch. TADA!

Maybe if you're under a certain age, the filter is automatically on and can't be turned off until you reach a certain age.

listen, it IS the 4 year old's fault if he turns off a filter. besides, four year old's wouldn't know what a filter is and kids are bad enough nowadays it wouldn't make a difference.just because a few people are offended, does not mean that everyone is. frankly, if you want to spend your time complaining about something on a website that's a waste of time. there are more important things in life than complaining. try it. you'll see. you should NOT care whats on a website.there is plenty worse things than language.

At your first point, you guys are the ones complaining, are you not? Let me just add you to my hypocrite list.

At the second point, I should not care what's on this website because there's plenty worse stuff than language? Who said language is the only thing that would appear. Projects could have all types of inappropriate stuff. Also, with inappropriate projects, comes a worse community. Say bye to the age of innocence and hello to the age of trolls, and spammers reining Scratch, putting people down and just being plain mean. This site would turn into a second YouTube. Horribly inappropriate content, featuring videos with bad things, horrible members of the community. I believe no one wants this for Scratch.
