It must cost an lot to run a website, pay the admins, keep the server up etc.. and still have enough to buy the things you need for yourself. The website doesn't even have adverts!
Do they get donations?
Are they all already rich?
How do they make money?

Um... well, Scratch is based at MIT (which might help), and you can donate to Scratch (you can do that here).

Scratch is supported with grants from different organizations and companies. Here is the list: http://scratch.mit.edu/about

MIT is (in my humble opinion) the most prestigious science and technology school in the United States. Only the best and brightest students get admitted. You have to be a genius, basically.

Again, that's just MY opinion.
