When I joined, Scratch was a better place... in my opinion.
I don't remember remix chains, but there would have been a few here and there.
I remember the Top Loved, with impressive programming and such.
And Top Viewed, with projects to boost up to Loved.
Now, it's rather irritating... but at least Top Loved has been improving some. The forums seem fine at that, but are becoming more rowdy; every time someone makes a thread that may seem ridiculous, everyone has to rush into it, get banned, flame each other, false quote, and bully each other.
And Miscellaneous is way too active.
My favorite part of the Scratch Website seems to be becoming the Text-Based Games. It's a fun place, smaller, and well kept. The users are friendly, there haven't been any flame wars, and everyone cooperates.
And I still love the Scratch program.

Sadly, I think we're at the point of no return.

When I joined Scratch nearly two years ago, Scratch was so different... it felt like a programming site.
Now, it feels like a social networking site.

Bah.
I hated Scratch in 2007.
Mainly because I was a complete idiot who spammed, insulted people and made terrible scratch projects. (Que some one quoting me and saying "you still don't do that?")

You guys are making it sound like scratch is a 3rd world country, that's being bombed and a major war is going on.
IT'S A WEB SITE.
And I don't think it's nearly as bad as everyone is saying it is.

Yeah, the TBG section is recovering.
We don't want it to recover faster, though...
On a good note, maybe this year will turn the tables once Scratch 2 is out.

Yeah... I think it's a bit obvious there's something going on.

I don't think so. The more people that join the more, let's say "non-07ers" we get. And proportionally we are getting a lot more "non-07ers" than "07ers".What's wrong with not being an '07er? I really don't see a difference between users, except that Scratch itself was different in '07...
By "07er" I meant more a type of person. In general the 07 crowd was oriented to making how quality programs and applications, as well as helpful and kind. The new kind of users we get are often spammy trolls etc.
Please don't say I am a spammer/troll.

I hope they do.
I wonder what effect Scratch 2.0 will have...

The Scratch Team doesn't seem to have noticed anything... all they seem to know about is that Inspiration and More and the Text-Based Games weren't that great. They don't seem to dislike the two forums that much - they created a new forum for the Text-Based Games and made the Miscellaneous forum.

Bah.
Even though we're '08ers, we're not stupid. Things didn't really happen until later '08. Before then, it was a great place.

I forgotten when I regesterd. 09 I think.
There are still some good projects out there. Just not on the front page and most of them don't use the fourms.

I'd be interested in hearing some specifics about what you see as problems - and what you have for proposed solutions

There's nothing wrong with chain remixes.

As more bad it has become, there is also more good; more smarter members, more projects to see, more ideas, etc. But you have to be mature enough and smart enough to filter all of the bad stuff out, just like how your ears filter out all of the other noises at lunch, so you can listen and talk to your friends.

Chain remixes: Annoying. Add yourself doing this-a-ma-jig. Add yourself doing that. BORING
Art projects: I have no problem with, unless they clutter up the front page. Because Scratch is for programming, not art. If you want to post art, then go to Deviantart and make an account. And since Scratch is for programming, non-programming stuff should NOT get on the front page.

Thing don't change just because you're complaining.
Have you never heard 'Man in the mirror' by Michael Jackson?
Then you've missed something, here's a link:

One thing I want to clear up, though.
When you first join anything it seems nice enough. It will either 'stay' nice or 'change'. A lot of people don't like change because they can't change fast enough to roll with it.
Everyone liked it when they joined, saying how it was much better, but then the site 'changed' and people disliked it. You can't always change it back either. That's why you can't get your childhood back no matter how many times you say it was the best time of your life.
Ignorance is bliss.

After reading the Terms of Service at DeviantArt, they are pretty clear that you need to be over 18

Can you recommend another site where kids can post art?

I actually think the remix chain idea was started by the scratch team, look at the old design studios.
