So many great novels to choose from...
Sci-Fi, probably "A Fire Upon The Deep" by Vernor Vinge.
Serious Fantasy, "The War Hound and The Worlds Pain" by Michael Moorcock.
Comic Fantasy "Night Watch" by Terry Pratchett.
Horror: "The Travelling Vampire Show" by Richard Laymon
Thriller: "Airframe" by Michael Crichton
Crime: Any of the earlier stuff by Kathy Reichs or Patricia Cornwell
Historical: Any of the earlier "Sharpe" books by Bernard Cornwell
Adventure: "The Killing Floor" by Lee Child
Mayhem, you didn't include Zarathustra in there. T_T

I like The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett.
In fact, I'm a huge fan of all his stuff!
