Users Creating Projects:

Why is it that as of Friday, November 27:

-397,598  Users have registered.

-91,991 Users have uploaded projects.....

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Vh1gCE9u8L8/SxCoaY7DEeI/AAAAAAAAABo/h2VMQ9e2bxs/S700/Picture+90.png

That means only 23.136686%  of the users have contributed.  That is less than 1 out of 4 users! (Duh.)  Also, when I look at the newest members, it seems to change constantly!  More and more are registering and not making projects.

-Scratch team:  How about you cannot create an account until you have uploaded a project?  It would slow the guys who make new users constantly down a lot.

-Does anyone agree?  Thanks!   big_smile

Re: Users Creating Projects:

But how would you upload a project without an account?? How about when an account is created, and is not active for a week, it will be delete. Inactive means no projects, 1-2 posts, etc.

I don't really agree. What if you went on vacation? And what if you were an amazing scratcher with lots of projects new members could learn from and your accout got deleted after you quit? That seems like a lot of work going to waste.

I mean like if you have no projects at all for 1 week, your acc will  be deleted.

Does this mean that you support my account being deleted for inactivity? I don't post a project every week.  tongue

It's interesting to note the huge difference between contributing user, and non-contributing users. I do remember in programming class that the professor encouraged everyone to get an account on the Scratch website in order to be able to download projects in order to view the coding and see how they work; few of us (like me) actually stayed behind and uploaded projects and got involved in the Scratch community - I wonder if this is the case with a majority of the non-contributing users; perhaps many of them have an account just for viewing and downloading purposes?

Re: Users Creating Projects:

Let's rephrase that one more time.  lol
If a user has no projects, and in one week after he/she registers, and he/she still has no projects, a warning will be sent. If that warning is ignored for another week, the acc will be deleted.

Getit?

Ah, now I see. But I still feel that's a bad idea. I didn't upload anything for about one month after registering with the Scratch website. Under those above conditions you presented, my account would be still marked for deletion.  sad

Re: Users Creating Projects:

Well, they would send you a warning and if you can give a valid reason, they won't delete your account. Maybe the Scratch Team could share the secret: That you can download a project without logging in by adding '/download' to the url.

Perhaps... but being that the login requirements are in place, it seems most likely that the Scratch Team has a reason for not sharing the URL loophole. And it seems like such a hassle to try and go after all the 300,000+ users who have not uploaded anything for the duration they have been on the Scratch website.  tongue

Additionally, you never know when someone using an account for viewing and downloading may end up desiring to post a Scratch project later on in the future (hey, that's what happened to me after sticking around on the Scratch website for a while.  wink  )
==========

Hmm... this topic is making me ponder over why there is such a large number of contributors over non contributors. Certainly new members without anything to share yet make up a portion of this non-contributing group, so do those who join for the sake of only downloading and/or only commenting. (And those commercial spammers but they make up such a very small and insignificant portion so I don't really count them). I wonder what other reasons are there: perhaps maybe those who need an account to post comments on the forums for help? Or maybe those who join for the sake of TBGs (although I'd hate to think of something like that  yikes )? Or maybe there were users who were first interested in Scratch, have not uploaded anything, and just ended up leaving without contributing anything because of loss of interest?  hmm

Re: Users Creating Projects:

Yeah, I have the same opinion. I guess the scratch team could always write a automatic detection script to do the automatic send warning/delete account thing.

Re: Users Creating Projects:

Maybe some of them are just busy working on a good project?  tongue

Or maybe they need to post in the forums when they didn't plan to make an account.
Or maybe they moved on to something else before they could upload a project.

maybe...

I don't know. You have a point, though! I've noticed it before, but just thought it was a big reason that I was clueless about.

Re: Users Creating Projects:

Why would we want to delete TONS of users? The way i see it is MORE users means the Scratch community is more popular and if users see that the community is popular then they will join adding even more users. Also ehem...more users means the worth of the site is expanding. Also the users DON'T lag up the system because they are inactive and projects lag up the system.
I hope want i said makes sense. (No seroiusly....it kinda doesnt make sense to me  lol )

With all these people quiting recently I agree with ScratchX. Scratch will turn deserted (Sort of...) if this becomes something real.

That idea wouldn't make sense either. If it was active then random non-members would be posting random project causing lots of spam in the end.
