Re: What is the most popular type of rpg?

I usually define an RPG as any game where you control one or multiple characters, and the background information of the game is mostly complete (hence RPG = Role-Playing Game).  I'm guessing that's what he meant when he said Zelda was an RPG.

There are formulas, how do you expect the enemies tell if they should be stunned or hurt? //Using an if statement. That is not a formula if you couldn't tell
Also, the majority of RPGs do have side quests, and I don't know too many other games with a complex dungeon like the RPGs.
//Doom and quake had dungeons, doesn't make them RPGs
Like I said, it's huge debate if Zelda is Action-Adventure or Action-RPG. //No it isn't, everyone knows Zelda isn't an RPG. Out of all the links about this on google, everyone says its an action adventure
IGN isn't exactly an encyclopedia // Its a credible source of gaming info

You sure it's not up for debate?
It's action, because it's not turn based, but also an RPG because of the free roaming world, new weapons, new equipment, and HP "levels", as well as the Magic Meter.
here's an interesting quote:

IGN user wrote:

...Consider this: You don't level up in Chrono Cross. You get stronger from beating bosses...as you do in Zelda. So what makes an RPG? Turn-based battles? A level up mechanic? An open-ended skill system? A story-driven experience? Multiple NPC characters to have conversations with?

And here's another quote

Wikipedia wrote:

The next two years would see the release of two games that would further define the action/RPG genre in Japan: Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda in 1986 and Falcom's Ys in 1987. While not strictly an action/RPG since it lacks RPG elements such as experience points, The Legend of Zelda influenced later games in the action-RPG genre.[2] Zelda II also implemented an RPG-esque system with action elements, making it closer to an action-RPG than other Zeldas. Ys, on the other hand, used true RPG principles. While not very popular in the West, the long-running Ys series has been very strong in Japan with many sequels, remakes and ports in the decade that followed its release.

And yet another quote from IGN

IGN User wrote:

You DO focus on character progression in Zelda. You just don't do it through traditional means.

This is a VERY old and dumb argument. Categorizing a video game is not going to help you in anything in your life, ever, except for organizing your game collection by genre(nerd!).

And in all reality, if you don't know how much the original Legend of Zelda helped pushed forward video game RPGs with it's technology, you must not have been paying attention.

While not strictly an action/RPG since it lacks RPG elements such as experience points,

This quote says that zelda is not an RPG. None of your sources say Zelda is an RPG, they just say it is kinda like an RPG which is what I am also saying. It has some elements of an RPG, but it is an action adventure game.

Games like Final Fantasy and WoW. Those are RPGs. They have Traditional RPG elements that Zelda lacks inculding Experience points, Detailed weapon statistics, and character classes amongst other things.

The official name for Zelda's genre is Action-Adventure-RPG.
Remember the Chrono Trigger quote.
Also, many of the older RPGs like Secret of Mana resembled Link to the Past than Final Fantasy.

The official name for Zelda's genre is Action-Adventure-RPG. //Official? Every official source including nintendo power says its an action adevnture
Remember the Chrono Trigger quote. //That was just something to consider, Chrono Cross, in all sources, is listed as an RPG and zelda is not
Also, many of the older RPGs like Secret of Mana resembled Link to the Past than Final Fantasy. //Yes, resembled. That doesn't make zelda games RPGs

Its not even a debate. No where does it say that Zelda is an RPG, its generally not even questioned.  FiremariomkiZX just doesn't know what an RPG is.

This is my last post here, but if you want to prove me wrong, find one official source saying that Zelda is an RPG.

I know what an RPG is.
And I know what an Action RPG is too.
And the Video Game Awards always put the Legend of Zelda series (Zelda 2 or not) in the
(drumroll...) RPG section.

Re: What is the most popular type of rpg?

I agree with Archmage that it is not technically an RPG, but I think they are calling it an RPG because there is not usually an Action/Adventure category on most websites.

Anyway.

Re: What is the most popular type of rpg?

Um, experience points, classes, and leveling up is not what makes an RPG, they are called Role Playing Games because you play a role, in legened of Zelda, you play the role of Link or the hero of hyrule, I notice lots of you are saying that LoZ is not an RPG, but Final Fantasy is a Traditional RPG. LoZ is still an RPG, but maybe not a traditional one. This fight is stupid, no one even bothered to think about what RPG stands for. Can a mod close this, I have the feeling this will become a flame war if it isn't one already.

Do you actually play the role, or just control the sprite?

There is a big difference between actual role-playing, where the personality that you imbue the character with makes a difference to the plot, and just controlling a sprite representing a named character on screen.

If two different people playing the game can decide (for example) to portray Link as a good guy, an evil guy or just in it only for the money, and the decisions they make because of that portrayal have an impact on the ongoing story and final outcome of the game, then yes, its an RPG.

Otherwise, it isn't.

Re: What is the most popular type of rpg?

Then Final Fantasy isn't an RPG, you don't control whether you're character is good or evil, or just in it for the money. If that's what you sya, then lots of thing they are says are RPG really aren't, if what you say is correct, pokemon isn't an RPG, Crono Cross isn't an RPG, Kingdom Hearts isn't an RPG, Murlock isn't and RPG you'd be amazed at the lack of video games that can be considered RPGs. I can only name 3 true video game RPGs if you are right, Fable , KOTOR and Jade Empire.

Correct - though you can add Deus Ex, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 (and their expansions), Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 (and their expansions), Icewind Dale and Mass Effect to the list off the top of my head

Re: What is the most popular type of rpg?

*sigh*....
kinda only meant how the graphics looked and the basic gameplay (jumping on platforms with up arrow or just walking north; Scrolling or not; attacking in the same screen or a new battle engine screen)
