It decreased quite a lot - According to my notes (class, of course  ), workers brought briefcases to work to be filled with money, which they immediatley spent on buying things like food. (This is probably right, since I see a vocabulary word in your post  )

a) that's not the only reason; there were plenty others (many of which were related to the aftermath of World War I)

I know that, those were major reasons.
