If you want something to do while Scratch is down, check out tbgs.tk! It's the new version of the (closed) Scratch TBGS, run by Scratchers! I'm going to spend most of my time there, anyway.

i've heard of it and i've never played it!!
i played the first game in the series and got pretty far through it (tales of phantasia) on a ROM (and that's something i'd like to try again at some point because it was pretty amazing) but i've never tried anything else in the series

Well, I USED to think it was obscure. It's not what most people think of off the top of their head. It's RELATIVELY obscure, compared to, say, Mario Bros or Pacman or one of those.

Ok, NOW Alex Kidd is the only video game series considered "obscure" on my list. Anyone heard of it BEFORE I told anyone about how awesome it is??

The presentation is a bit lacking at points, but definitely worth a try. The characters are great, the battles are fun, the story is very good and has lots of twists, and best of all... THE MULTIPLAYER IS AMAZING.

I've played it myself before; never thought of it as an obscure game. 
Two fairly unknown DOS games I like are Tyrian (a vertical scrolling shooter; a modern port that runs in most platforms is here. fun to play on Android 
) and Assault Trooper (an isometric stealth shooter by some sort of Finnish indie. Here's a video).
