Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

No...where did you here that? Also, scratch isn't about popularity, and if we do this row, it makes people want to become more popular. There is no prize for being popular, you don't get money, you don't get a limo, it is just online.

Oh, one more thing. Here is probably what the row would look like (you didn't do a very good job):

No...
Also, the term "Unpopular Scratcher" is a bit demeaning.

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

i dont think that is necessary given the amount of personalized rows. projects should be showing up if they are good.

How would you define "unpopular" or "needs more views" though?

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

How about 'Projects That Need Support"?

It's more friendly and fits in with Scratch's helpful theme. Though, the latest submissions will be pretty much the same thing. I guess it could be worked out with this algorithm:

v - average views
f - average favourites
l - average love-its

(l x f) / v = n

1 in n chance of a random project being featured.

That term would still be kind of demeaning.
I think something more like "Surprise projects" would be better.

There used to be a Surprise Projects row, but it was removed because inappropriate projects were being front paged.

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

The "unpopular" name made me think of people [ok mods, please don't edit/delete this until you read it] who were hated by the community.  Only after I read further did I know.  Good idea, but maybe change the name, like "surprise" or something.

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

It's not necessary at all, as Scratch is not a social site where you aim for popularity. It's an educational tool.

We don't have the row anymore put we still have the page. It's nicely tucked away where it's still easily accessible bit (via a link through the list of Featured projects page) but hidden enough to prevent a bad surprise project from getting on the front page.  smile

Just pointing out, if the chance of the project appearing on the front page is 1 in n, the formula would rather be
v / (l x f) = n

It's not a bad idea, but what I'd do is change the surprise projects page to use this algorithm instead of a completely random pick, but I wouldn't add the row to the front page.

If popularity becomes more of an issue, it could be a significant symbol to add it to the front page, to say "the community is also made up of these people who also make great projects".

Yeah, I agree with you. But, whenever I see a bad project on the front page, it is usually flagged in seconds.

True, but other bad things can happen: notably, the thumbnail might not be updated on time and certain the information can stay on the front page until the front page cache clears (which might take a while).

Yeah - I'd have to agree.  hmm

There probably isn't going to be one.

You do have a point there. Also, the name is kind of demanding. I am sure that a lot of people want to be famous, and if they are deemed unfamous, then they must feel awful.

Also, what if a person doesn't want to be famous. For example, I upload a lot of projects to my test account to test a game before I show it on my real account. Even though there is a slim chance, one of my test projects could be on the front page and then people will friend my test account and I will have nowhere to upload my test projects.

What others have said. It might not sound good, test accounts might be ruined, and inappropriate stuff might come up.

How about an option on your project to stop it from becoming one of the ones on the front page?

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

May be scratch team should look for projects which are good programmed I.e. The programs which r unique , unknown , and wich have something new like the jelly project which was on front page . They should start a welcome screen telling or showing new but good projects made by newbies .

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

In general the "unpopular" bit should definitely be cut off. Its just horrid and mean to label somebody as unpopular. Scratch is a place for making creative projects, being friendly and treating everybody being as an equal. Not a popularity contest.

Re: Unpopular Scratcher Row in 2.0

I just made a topic about this, but it's a duplicate.

Old Topic wrote:

This would give a chance for Scratchers who put hard work into their projects to be featured.  The formula should be: it must have less than 50 views, less than 10 loves, and the loves/views > 1/10. So if something gets loved a lot like this, it might go on the front page for a day. Whichever project has the best ratio goes on first. Then it will somehow be "marked" so it doesn't get featured again. For featured Scratchers: if all projects have less than 30 views and 5 loves, whoever has the best loves/views ratio gets on the front page. Again, the user will be marked so he/she doesn't get featured again.

If you don't understand, this is what I mean. It was a bit difficult to do, since I am not a 2.0 alpha tester.
http://oi49.tinypic.com/r10rjn.jpg

And yes, the term "Surprise Projects" or "Surprise Scratchers" is much better.
