Name Censors

for making a scratch account, I think there should be censors on the name (if already there, add more words), because what good can happen from a user who's name has another term for adult entertainment in it, (I'm making this suggestion because the mods aren't on and there's commercial spam for it)?

Re: Name Censors

So, from looking at the code, there is indeed a censor in the usernames. It censors out most bad words.
However, I just looked through the censor list, and the word you are referencing there wasn't on it (although it is censored on the forums). I agree, it should be there, at least in Scratch 2.0.

(I support, just giving a technical explanation)

it's not censored on the forums. The website the commercial spammer was linking to, had the term in there, in a post, on the forums.

How exactly did you look at the code, I'm just curious.
Also, do you really get banned for using the word ****?

On a first offence I doubt you would get banned, though it depends on the context. But the word would be removed and I don't think the moderation team would be very happy with you!

Has the commercial spam people were talking about above been cleaned up?

EDIT: Never mind, I see it's been deleted already  smile

The thing with word censoring is often best known as the Scunthorpe Problem. If you read the linked wiki page, perhaps you can see the problems with having an automatic filter like the one you suggest. Usually us Mods or one of the community spot the name and it's removed fairly quickly anyway, which is a slower, but more failproof method.

EDIT2: I've removed the link to the Scunthorpe problem Wikipedia page. Don't be surprised if you check it out yourself and discover that a page DISCUSSING bad language filters contains some. ¬_¬

Scratch is open source and the code can be found on Assembla. He'll probably link to it.

While it's protocol, is a child really going to scroll through a wikipedia page?

I think this thread has been resolved and is starting to get off topic, so I'm closing it.
