Alice Official Topic

Alice is like Scratch, but it's in 3D. Discuss it here.

I would like to get it, but it's like 350MB. That'll take about 6 hours to download.

Listen. You can't really compare them since Alice is 3D and is aimed at educating people on Java's syntax in a visual way, and Scratch is just to teach logic skills. IMO, Alice is more advanced since it is in 3D, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, Americans have internet for free and it reaches speeds of up to 50 megabytes per second, but usually it's about 2 megabyte per second. Here in SA we pay R200 - R2000 ($25 - $250) per month for internet that reaches speeds of up to 5 megabytes per second, but is usually 30 kilobytes per second, which is 0.03 megabytes per second. That's what I have, 20KBPS. Not that I'm complaining, I mean, internet is internet.

The only reason I'm complaining about it is that I can't download most things, like Alice, because they are too big.

It's odd that the block design makes it harder.

Re: Alice Official Topic

I've used it, worst programming language. Not even the simple boolean touching [object]. I emailed support about a year ago, that was "guarenteed" to respond within 24 hours, don't download it. It's a complete waste of space. If you want to make games, this software is a COMPLETE NO... Also, this is what I think:

object_1.facePalm.for[(80)ml]. AT least I think.

Alice is not more advanced, just let me tell you that. Alice goes as far as not being able to upload your own 3D sprites. You have to make a selection from the library they have. I mean, If you mean because it's in 3D it's more advanced because of the code used to MAKE Alice, then yeah. But my no means can you make more complex stuff than in scratch.

Oh, now I get it. I guess I was judging it by the cover since I don't have it. Now it does sound suckish.  hmm  Darn. I had so many great 3D game ideas.  mad

So did I, they were squashed with Alice, but then blowed back up to normal when I found Scratch! Well done MIT!

Re: Alice Official Topic

Actaully, the Squeak Smalltalk that Scratch is developed on, or I nickname "MIT Sqeak" is modified, and actaully REMOVED the Alice functions, so basically Alice is originally uncluded in Squeak.

I'm back.
Maybe.

Re: Alice Official Topic

You can model objects and add them to the library files. i found it a bit more confusing, but my experience with OOP helped.

You can make games. You can't sell them, but you can make them.

At least 60 seconds have to pass between posts. Please wait a little while and try posting again.

You can create games with it.

I used to use it, before I found Scratch.
The layout can be confusing at first.

Re: Alice Official Topic

Maybe MIT could make something that is really advanced, like C# or C++ but it uses the Scratch Block interface. Like scratch is now, but with like, 1000 blocks to do ALL of the things that C++ can do, and export to exe and swf, stuff like that. That would be AWESOME.

Re: Alice Official Topic

I just got a stupendous idea: What if we contact the Alice team and ask a few questions, and then make a scratch-like version. It would be the first 3D scratch mod ever! You guys should try it.

You just see my 3d renderer and you won't even need a mod.

(In development, but can draw the basic 3d stuff)

Just learn a language that does what you need it to do.
This definitely wouldn't work because Flash and Squeak aren't low level. How can you make a low level programming language without making it in a low level programming language?
