Is it okay if I report the post? How long is considered "necroposting"?

Yes, reporting the post is what you should do. Probably anything over a month is too old, but every once in a while there are exceptions.

Okay. Although I might prefer to hear from a moderator before doing anything.

Do what gettyburg11 says. A mod will take care of the issue from there.

When someone thinks "I have a totally unrelated question, but instead of making a new thread about it, or at least asking it in a recent thread, I'm gonna find the oldest thread I can and ask it there".
Basically, posting in an old thread.

Great question, this should be moved to FAQ.

What about duplicate posting? I mean, let's say you wanted to talk about something in RaP that has a post, but it's really old. Do you make a duplicate or necropost?
I'd say duplicate.

I'd say duplicate.
If the other topic is more than a month dead, or past the 5th page of the forum, make a new one.

You should report it, like what everyone else said.

I think necroposting is all right if the discussion can be continued--for example, if it's a smashing discussion about a book or television show. However, if someone asked how to uh, heal their carnivorous plants for example, months back, necroposting is blatantly useless and the post should be reported.
