Message given when friending

So often I feel like giving a short message when friending someone, like "I though I added you a long time ago...", or "You rock!", or even just " smile ". So I think it should prompt you for a short message when you add someone to friends.

That would be private messaging, though.

Yeah, sort of, but it would be a one time thing.

Not really; people would just remove the user from their friend list, add them again, and they'll get to send another message. It'd be a bit long-winded, but it'd still happen.

Re: Message given when friending

Believe it or not, some scratchers would use this as a private messaging tool. This would bring censor issues, the need to monitor friend messages and I think it would've a violation of COPPA's law of how minors on the Internet can act and what privileges they can have.

I don't think it'd really be worth it. Instead, you can just stop by one of their projects and leave your message there.  wink

I support, but only if the admins can see it, so it wouldn't be private messaging.

Oh. I never thought Scratchers would do that (I didn't even think of the private messaging issue).

Oh, well.  sad

What if you had to pick your message from a list?  Then it would cut down on PMing.

That's a very good idea actually.

Yeah, that'd work very well. Like, you can choose a pre-selected message from, as you mentioned, a drop-down list? Generic ones like those mentioned in the OP.

Instead of giving up on the idea, though, why not come up with a better solution?

How about instead of a user being allowed to type whatever they want, they could choose to send one of the 1-2 sentence pre-determined messages when they friend them. Some of them could be "Hey, I'm [automatically fill the user's username] and I'd like to be friends!", or "What's up? I'm [automatically fill the user's username]".
