Mods usually close it if its spam to look back at it later in terms of helping out in future situations. But if its a bad word or just plain rude they will delete it or edit it out. I never have seen a mod delete anything before on Scratch. But interesting question. Why don't you ask one of the mods or Scratch Team members?

As far as I know, the usual procedure is to close it so that other Scratchers may learn from your thread...but if it is not suitable or particularly sensitive you might want to delete it.

I'd recommend reporting it and asking for it to be closed; that way, others can learn as well

As many people here have said, people usually have them closed so that a) others can learn from it and b) it can be re-opened if necessary.
