Why do topics get locked?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this or this was already asked :3
~
If I see a topic and want to contribute to it, I don't see why it should be locked. I think we should be able to post a topic without worrying about it being locked, but that's my opinion.

What PP01 said, and there’s nothing to add if it’s been closed.

When it turns into flamebait.

Gosh, I feel like a 7-year old on misc because of my post count.

That's not the correct answer.

They get closed when they are inactive. But you can report the topic to get it back.

Also, it stops necroposting.

The majority of my posts are in “All About Scratch”.

A good place is Show and Tell. That’s loaded with topics, and everyone REALLY wants you to post.

This

@HappyChao: It's when somebody bumps up an unneeded/unwanted topic just before it closes.

Well, it could be correct.
Topics also get closed when there is an opportunity for it to flame.

This

@HappyChao: It's when somebody bumps up an unneeded/unwanted topic after it should have been closed, or needs to be closed, or when it’s really old. Hence the word “necro” meaning dead.

No, they don't get locked because of flamebait. They close topics because of flamebait sometimes, not lock.

What's a locked topic?

Here are examples of locked topics. After a topic has been inactive for a while, they automatically get locked.

Locked and closed are the same things... at least, almost.

Re: Why do topics get locked?

They're closed when they start to violate the Misc Guidelines, turn into an argument, get off-topic, or when the owner requests them to be closed.

1. No topics did that as far as I know.
2. ...... useless.
3. Many topics did that on other forums I've been on, and they've not been closed.
4. No question. Completely useless.

1. That's because they were closed.
2. How is it useless?
3. Thats because they were different forums As in, they have different rules than this ones.
4. Okay, say you made a thread about how awesome you were and people kept on saying you were stupid. Would you want the thread to be closed?

If I see a topic and want to contribute to it, I don't see why it should be locked. I think we should be able to post a topic without worrying about it being locked, but that's my opinion.

What kind of locked topic are you talking about?

Some topics get locked if it gets too spammy or too heated; obviously those topics get closed to prevent users from contributing to the spam or flames (whether or not these topics get re-opened depends on the willingness of the users involved to stop the behavior that degraded the thread in the first place and the content existing in the thread already).

But on some forum sections, inactive topics get locked automatically, this is to prevent necroposting. On topics where autolock is not in place, evaluating whether or not a topic should be locked due to necroposting is done on a case-by-case basis (for example, bumping up a thread about an unsolved bug error to post a fix is okay, bumping up a thread about a bug error that has already been resolved is not okay). If you own a topic that got autolocked due to inactivity, you can always request to have it opened again by hitting the report open and leaving a note for the topic to be reopened.  wink
