It would be nice to have all the state information for a sprite available as variables (using a pull-down menu for set and change). That means x,y,costume, ghost effect, color effect, layer, ...
In fact, if scratch ever implements user-defined blocks, over half the existing blocks could be moved out to standard libraries, with definitions that just use the variables.
The current system of having x, y, mouse x, variables, ... all be different sorts of objects does not make variables easier for kids to understand---it takes one concept and makes it look like many.

Good news for people! I've been looking at the beta version of Scratch 1.2 and it does have much easier access to state information of both the same sprite and other sprites.
I think the interface could be usefully simplified by taking how they did the new sensor for state and applying it to all variables, but v1.2 is a step in the right direction.
