Buy a beta? Doesn't sound right.

But then you get the full version, which releases on Friday, for free, which gives you the extra playtime and full game for a discounted price.

I played Minecraft Classic and it wasn't anything that exciting for me. I wouldn't buy the beta, but do as you wish.

Trust us, it's amazing.
In the end, classic was pretty much the beta release of the game. It has clearly gone through many stages of development, and even at the beginning were good enough to pay for. (the price started around 5 Euros)
Classic: 0.3, 1st real release
Survival test: Begins to have more modern functions, exploding TNT, mobs,
Indev: InDevelopment. The game is getting farther along, and more features are being added.
InfDev: Another release, more recent than Indev.
Alpha (I bought during alpha): Farther and farther along.. We'll get done soon!
Beta (current version): Even more features! Pistons! Squids! Repeaters!
Minecraft (upcoming version): The "full" version of the game. Updates will still occur.
That's the great thing about Minecraft. It never ends. You can continue going around and building until you run out of ideas! (a long time)
Also, the game will never truly leave beta. It will always be under development, whether that's by the brilliant team at Mojang or a dedicated croup of community modders, minecraft will go on and on and on.

So you're not only getting the beta you're getting the full game.
that makes more sense.
