I just discovered something interesting- I think I know why MLP:FiM has such a big audience! I don't know, most of you probably don't know about Sailor Moon, an epic anime from about... 13, maybe? years ago. Well, if you look at the mainly last part of the 2nd episode of MLP:FiM, it's a SUPER similar scene to the Sailor Moon episode titled: The Holy Grail! Moon's Double Transformation!
It has the same kind of background, and the ponies (who resemble the Sailor Scouts) all transform, just like in the Sailor Moon episode. Anyways, I just thought that was very interesting.
Also, the main pony character has a special transformation item that just... appears. Just like in Sailor Moon. Now I'm honestly NOT trying to hurt any fans or bash the show, I'm just saying I found the similarities interesting.

It's popular because the creator of it also made Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

It's popular because people think they're cool if they say they watch it. The episode was probably a parody of sailor moon, so similar to it on purpose

The pilot bears some similarities to Sailor Moon, but the rest of the show follows a much more episodic slice-of-life style that's much different. So no, I doubt that's why most people like the show. Good observation though.
