When drawing my own sprite how does Scratch determine the centre of rotation and is the initial pointing direction always toward the 3 oclock position. I know I can set the centre of rotation but I prefer to let Scratch do it for me.

I think Scratch determines the center of rotation based on the center of the first costume you drew (i.e. if you make one costume based in the center, and the second costume in the corner of the screen, the rotation center will still be in the center of the screen.) The initial direction is always 90º (the three-o-clock position.)

no...there is a center of rotation for each costume, and like you said, it will be based on the center of the costume.

Thanks for the replies to my very first posting. A further question on the same theme. If I generate a sprite using say gimp and import that, is there any way I can set the centre of rotation or do I just have to accept the scratch choice?

Yes, you import it into scratch, edit it, and change the COR (center of rotation).

Is there any one line equivalent for rotation equivalent to
Glide for Z seconds to X Y
The glide is splendid for smooth moves. I know I can do I can do small repeat angles allowing a short delay to achieve the effect but it is rather clumsy.
These questions are all to help me do teaching animations of plan views of Scottish Country dancing basic formations.
