Trolling vs. Cyberbullying: What crosses the line?

This should be stickied, as New Scratchers should know this.

Trolling and Cyberbullying are NOT the same.It is time to set the record straight.

Trolling is being mean or rude to other users on Scratch.

Cyberbullying is repeated/severe trolling.

Example of Trolling:

Troller wrote:

This project is lame.

Example of Cyberbullying:

Cyberbullier wrote:

This project is lame.

Cyberbullier wrote:

You have no life.

Cyberbullier wrote:

Leave Scratch. No one wants you here.

Consequences:
Trolling-Removal of offending comments/posts and warnings.
Cyberbullying-Bans.

Neither are acceptable on Scratch. Cyberbullying is illegal in Washington.

Report any trolling or cyberbullying.

Ask me any questions you have, and Scratch On!

Re: Trolling vs. Cyberbullying: What crosses the line?

My understanding of the term "cyberbullying" is similar to what you have spelled out here - repeated, persistent harassment using electronic media of all sorts.  Trolling, on the other hand, can have another definition besides just being mean - it's also when somebody tries to fool other people into an emotional response by saying something provocative.

But regardless of the terminology, both of them are against the Community Guidelines and are not okay on Scratch.  Either one of them can result in a warning and/or an account block, depending on the language used and whether there have been previous warning.  So I'm not sure I completely agree with your "Consequences" section.

Thanks for taking the time to try and clear up the use of the terms though...it helps if we all understand what we mean when we use the words we choose to use.  What's even more important, though, is what you mentioned as well: that everybody understands that mean behavior is never okay on Scratch (regardless of what it's called) and that when you see it, you should click on the "flag as inappropriate" link on the main site or the "report" link here in the forums.

Re: Trolling vs. Cyberbullying: What crosses the line?

Trolling isn't exactly "Trolling is being mean or rude to other users on Scratch"... What the term "trolling" has come to mean in the last few years is horrible. Trolling isn't being annoying, a jerk, or saying straight-forward insults. When a certain website started the "gold account" fad many years ago, it was funny and subtle - these days, anything greeted with the over-used "trollface" image and "UU MAAAD??" is classified as trolling.

Yeah, Scratch is pretty safe from cyberbullying. However, if this does happen, contact Scratch (not in a comment) or your parents. If you feel you are being threatend or if you do not feel safe, you CAN contact the police.

Re: Trolling vs. Cyberbullying: What crosses the line?

@schnirfl I made that example because I wanted to be sure that people understand.
Not everyone would get sublte sarcasm/inside jokes.

@Paddle2See I made this because the severity of the offense can determine what you should do about it. Trolling is ignorable, while cyberbullying actually IS illegal in Washington State.

P.S. I know the illegal part because I live in Washington and the Technology Agreement passed out at our school says cyberbullying is against section whatever.

Re: Trolling vs. Cyberbullying: What crosses the line?

Trolling crosses over into cyberbullying in my mind when the troll begins to target one person in particular.

Re: Trolling vs. Cyberbullying: What crosses the line?

There are actually users called both troll and troller, so using their usernames might not be ideal...  tongue
