Help - What Should I Do?

For music homework a few weeks ago, we had to write a Christmas poem. The best one would be turned into a song and performed at our winter concert.
Unfortunately, someone in my form misunderstood and brought in one she found on the internet and now she has won. Our music teacher doesn't know that she didn't write it, and although she planned to, the person hasn't told her. She hasn't told many people, and though I didn't think she was my friend, she told me. Now I don't know whether to tell the teacher or leave it alone. If I didn't think she'd find out about it sooner or later, I would ignore it, but if she does, this person will be in trouble.

Please tell me what you think I should do.

I also hope this isn't too confusing.

Edit: our music teacher has also written a tune to go with the words.

Well my opinion is this: you shouldn't tell on your friend. Your friend should be honest, but let her do the talking.

You need to go up to your teacher and tell her the truth.  It's better to do what's right than to keep a secret and live with the guilt.

Well, if she's found out then there's the issue of plagarizm. Some schools have really strict rules about that.

Maybe get her to explain that she didn't understand the assignment to the teacher? I'm pretty sure if the teacher knew it was an honest mistake it wouldn't be a big deal... But if someone found out about it before your friend says anything, that could be bad.

I think it's unfair to the rest of the class if the person won using a plagiarized poem whereas everyone had to put effort into theirs. Not to mention: if you guys are performing this in a concert, what will happen if someone in the audience recognizes the poem and suddenly motions that the poem is plagiarized? That will make a bad situation worse.

How long until the concert? I'd say to try to convince your friend to go to the teacher about what she had done (it's a lot better if your friend comes clean), otherwise you might have to be the one to tell the teacher.

If you're scared about being mistrusted for telling on her: perhaps you can try to find a way to tell the teacher in a private/discreet manner? If your teacher has an office mailbox, you could try dropping an anonymous note in the mailbox saying the poem was copied (and giving the link to it), or if there's a way to contact the teacher by phone or e-mail, you can contact the teacher that way (you can then request the teacher to not disclose your name).
