I've never actually seen a spambot, and most ReCaptchas take anything, they're just there to scare and annoy people.

OK. You must never have owned a forum. My forum recieved 30 spam users, along with 27 spam posts. Tell me, do spambots exist? And Re-captchas don't scare away proper users - they scare away lazy ones.

the annoying thing is that sometimes they aren't readable and others contain characters not type-able on a keyboard

I like the recaptchas with 2 letters, or those where you can always reload the image until you find an easy-to-read one. I hate the long, 3 worded ones that Yahoo mail sometimes asks you to put in!
