Blob, I know that you said that we should not have roles and everyone just help out everyone, but I think we should just start like this and let things play out.

I like the list idea! that would help a ton.

Hey kamesh,

I'm DIY, as you may remember from our little chat on my Goblet of Fire videogame. You may remember you invited me in as a programmer, but I'm sorry I couldn't make it into Collab-Camp because I was really busy with school work. I just wanted to let you know that if you need me to program anything, I'd be OK to help, but it's alright if your team is full at the moment.

Okay blob, I think I can make a spaceship in 3ds max 12. Maybe I can upload the files to dropbox, then you can download them, convert them to blender (if that's possible). I'm not sure if I know how to make MAXscript render every angle of an object on two axes by 36 degrees. That way, you can do the rendering in Python.

Okay, I did a little bit of research. I may be able to save my spaceship as a .obj or .lwo file, whichever's best in Blender. Or maybe I can save it as a .dae file using COLLADA. That seems like a better option. Then you can import it into blender, and do all the scripting and rendering. Right?

That's what I was thinking - sounds great!

The scripting is already done - I've uploaded it, too. (There's a link to the Python script off my "3D Susanne" project - I'll post a direct link later if needed). It should be easy enough for you to model in 3DS Max, import the file to Blender, and run the script if you wanted to see the results of your modelling instantly - but sending it to me to render is fine, too.  smile

I'll have a go at writing you a list and posting it later.  smile  In the meantime, I would refer you to this:

We're planning to make a game based on the retro game called Elite. Go grab a copy of DOSBox and download the game here to try it out!  big_smile

A quick summary: you fly between star systems in your spaceship. You can dock with the space station orbiting each planet to buy and sell goods and upgrade your ship. The prices vary between planets, and they're all different types with different histories. When flying between planets, pirates sometimes attack you; or you can go and attack others!

The view from the spaceship is 3D, but as it's retro, it's very basic 3D and so won't be too difficult to do in Scratch. In fact, something similar has already been done!

I wrote a post here (about halfway down) that explains the game in detail. Go read it!

And seriously - have a go at making the game work yourself!
You don't just want _my_ view on it...

The more the merrier. As long as we stay orginized. If we have more people programming, it will be easier to fill a vacancy if someone becomes absent. So, basically my answer is YES

OK, thanks for clearing that up... I saw the post about Elite. I'll check back here every few days. I'm not a big fan of the Mailinator thing though. Not to say that it wasn't a good idea. But I don't know that I want another e-mail address, especially if it deletes my mail after a while. I'm not that good at checking my current e-mail address. and why exactly are we using this Mailinator thing? One other thing: I won't be surprised if nobody agrees, but I think using the stamping method for creating a 3d effect is easier to make and use in programming.

The mallinator is a temporary email address you use ONLY YO GET YOUR DROPBOX PASSWORD. We find it a good way to get the password to you without anyone lese knowing. We post all of our in progress and finished projects in dropbox so our team can access them. Also, for the 3d, not everyone  knows how to use 3d.

I don't think we should use stamping. If we actually take a range of pictures from different angles like blob8108 said, I think it will look more realistic.

Well, Blob and I kind of came up with a system.

1.)I (hopefully) make a 3d spaceship model in Autodesk 3ds Max 2012.
2.)I (somehow) save my model as a file that can be imported into Blender, and post it to dropbox.
3.)Blob8108 downloads the file, imports it into Blender, and runs the python script to create the images that wiill be imported into scratch.
4.)Someone has to come up with a script similar to this in order to bring out the '3d'.

It's well organized, and it won't take forever, but I don't know how long this will take...

Running the Python script takes five minutes - once you've got the model, it's easy.

Re: Team Earth

It's not too difficult to figure out that 3d method, and you can do that in Scratch. I don't even know where to get Blender let alone how to use it, apparently you need to convert into filetypes I've never even heard of, and I have no clue what to do with a Blender file once it gets into Scratch. With the stamping method, you can program just like you normally would, with one or two modifications. And on Mailinator: I think the dropbox idea is really good, but I don't know what that is either. Somebody will have to explain that to me if I'm going to use it. And if someone can tell me how to get to Mailinator I'll get an address.

Re: Team Earth

I've got a little bit of experience with making 3d images using stamping. Before I started making Mario games my 3d projects were my most popular. I've taken a few tries at making 3d games, so I know some of what works and what doesn't. Also, I can usually take a sprite and make it "3-dimensional." And just to make sure, you know what I mean by "The stamping method," right?

Sorry, I didn't see that post earlier. I think that will be a lot harder to program with. That seems like making a platformer by taking a screenshot of every position on the screen possible then cycling them. Besides, it seems like if we do try to stay within assigned roles I'll probably be stuck as the one making the sprites anyways. Once I've got dropbox working for me (assuming that I will get dropbox working for me), can I at least try making one of the sprites with stamping? I just think it would make things a lot easier. I mentioned a few more reasons in one of my posts above.
