Scratch isn't a good place to talk about severe mental stress and pain

Prior to joining the Scratch Team I was a counselor, and had the opportunity to work with lots of kids who were going through really difficult times. I learned that a lot of good can come from talking about pain in an open and accepting way. Most of us will experience hard times of one kind or another in our lives. We can all draw strength and encouragement from hearing people we are close to talk about working with their pain constructively.

Recently I've noticed some posts on Scratch that touch upon really difficult subjects - issues like anorexia, thoughts of suicide, and self-harm. While I think it's good for people to reach out to friends and family about these issues, I don't think the same can be said for reaching out on Scratch. The Scratch community just isn't designed to be a good place to sort these things out. For one thing, these kinds of issues may be too difficult and intense for many younger Scratchers (the site is designed for ages 8 and up). For another, it's just too easy to troll. Claims made on open, anonymous sites like Scratch are difficult to confirm, and there have been many fake claims in the past. People who are willing to share their experience in an open and candid way deserve to do so in a space that's always respectful and confidential, with people they know they can trust. We just can't guarantee that on an open site like Scratch.

So from here on out, we want Scratchers who are experiencing these serious issues to get help outside of Scratch. Here are a few resources that we can recommend:

* If you go to school, talk to your school counselor. A good counselor can listen deeply to what's going on and get you started on the path to working things out

US:
* If you are feeling bad now, and want to talk to someone, call, email, or IM the hopeline: 1-800-442-HOPE, or browse to http://www.preventsuicide.us/hopeline-n … lpnow.html

Canada:
http://kidshelpphone.ca offers excellent support online and on the phone for kids and teens who are getting a bit stressed.

(If you know of other good resources, let us know in a reply and we'll consider adding them to this post.)

Scratch On!

Edit: We've updated the Misc. Guidelines to reflect the new policy.

I understand about the suicide bit, but good people on Scratch can help.  And it's mainly a few users, but I believe they are some of the best people on Scratch.

That may be, but Scratch still isn't the place to have those conversations. Everything said on Scratch is out in the open, and not everyone who reads a thread posts on it. We know younger kids follow the Misc. even if they aren't "Scratchers" or can't post. It's not fair to put them in a position to have to sort out what's going on. No offense to those who are suffering - but it's just too intense for little kids to have to deal with.

And this is not to say you shouldn't support your friends: we hope that you will continue to do so. Just not through talking about these kinds of issues on Scratch.

Alright. I agree, this totally makes sense and if someone wants to talk to someone else in the community about stuff like this, they can use things like email, Steam, Skype, etc.

Another quick question: if these people are so anonymous like you say, how do you know that they have made false claims?

Well, that part is mostly referring to past cases that we've seen on the main site, where people have made throwaway accounts and posted about having terminal diseases with only days to live, or the loss of loved ones who then turn out later not to have actually died, etc. That kind of thing. When people who are posting comments to Scratch minute by minute from the hospital during the last moments of their life, and then are miraculously cured, you kind of start to realize that not everything they've said is exactly true.

However, I do think that even if the facts aren't straight, the gist often is -- probably people who make those accounts really are suffering, or angry, or sad in some way, just not for the reasons they are claiming.

But anyway - these are all old cases we were referring to and are not to say that any particular Scratcher hasn't been on the level. And even when people make claims that are kind of dubious, we still respond respectfully because there's no sure way to know. But one can respond respectfully without feeding into the drama, which is what we try to do.

That's more or less what I meant. Most trolls probably are angry or sad about something, and probably have good reasons to be. They just take it out by trolling.

But I don't want to get too far off topic... so let's bring this back.  smile

Maybe you should sticky this, Lightnin.
What about discussing it quietly in comments?

I think the same concerns ultimately apply - anyone, including younger Scratchers, might encounter them. More people read stuff than post / comment.

As for stickying - I'm not sure it's really necessary yet. But I have updated the Misc guidelines to reflect the new policy.

While we're at it, can we also make some official rules?

In addition to the updates to the Misc. guidelines?
What would you recommend?

I think he means a more clear defined outline of what's not alright, though I could be wrong.

I think that topics about (thinking of) suicide, stress, etc. are alright. The community is nice, and if somebody's being mean, the report button is for that.
