Team Fortress 2?

My son was curious about these kids pretending to be "Team Fortess" characters and looked up the game. He is 10 years old! There were some really bloody graphic pics! How can you allow these people on Scratch to make references that will get young kids like my son to look up this ...garbage?

Don't depend on his age to allow him to see certain things. It all depends on maturity.

Thanks for posting to share your concerns.

As some older Scratchers can testify, we often remove projects, comments, or discussions that we feel are too mature for an all-ages community, or which otherwise break our community guidelines. When it comes to posting links to other sites, it's definitely not ok to link to stuff that's too violent or otherwise inappropriate. However, the issue gets quite a bit more complex when it comes to making references to things that are popular in children's media. Preventing community members from even mentioning video games targeted towards teenagers would require an extremely strict model of censorship, one that would be difficult to enforce and have many side effects. While there are some websites - like Club Penguin, for example - that do have these kinds of policies in place, we've chosen not to take that approach.

I hope this helps explain our point of view. Please feel free to write directly to us via the "contact us" link at the bottom right of every page on Scratch if you have additional thoughts or concerns.

Re: Team Fortress 2?

Just tell your son to be careful what he searches and tell him that he needs to ask you for permittion for you to look at the site and/or sign up. If you think it's appropiate for his age, allow him to use it.

You should also monitor him when hes on the computer/latop every so often.

TF2 is amazing. No one cares about blood and gore! I am 10. I play call of duty. I am a scout.

It proves that games with blood and gore get better reviews. And minecraft always has good reviews.

Re: Team Fortress 2?

Please tell me someone didn't create this account just to complain about TF2.

EDIT: Not everyone on the Forums are ten year olds. As a parent, it is your responsibility to take care of your children and monitor what they do, NOT the Scratch Team's. What they are doing is harmless, as the Terms of Service and moderators prevent them from posting offensive links, comments, and images. Although it may be offensive to some, MANY consider it to be a great game, parents AND children included. I would recommend watching what your child does more closely, WITHOUT sheltering them. Kids should not be sheltered. Protected, yes. Sheltered, no. Have a talk with your child about the internet, and teach him to try and stay away from things that might be too mature for him. We all have to learn sometime.  smile

Hope this helped.  big_smile

Re: Team Fortress 2?

Talking about tf2 does not have any bloody graphics. Posting, say, a picture of a heavy mowing down BLUs with gibbed enemies in the background?... Maybe that should not be allowed.
I'm not sure if this is possible in Fluxbb, but is there any way that scratch team can make it so that violent discussions and games will have a warning or something?

Freedom of speech is a bit subjective. You might say that scratch can't ban swearing, because we have the right to say what we want. Once again, it would be good to be able to post a warning message on a forum if its about stuff like tf2. I'm not against tf2 though. Its epic.

This is compounded by the fact that most of our users are of 13-16 years of age (including me), so enforcing censorship like this would also not fit the sites central userbase. (We also have a large spike of users aged 21)

obviously thats not what i meant by freedom of speech. i meant the right to talk about what we want to talk about, as long as its in a child friendly way. those kids didn't tell the parent's child to look up team fortress, the child decided that on their own.

...Wait, a parent that actually lives up to the stereotypes?

Look, let me explain.

In your mind...
reality and the internet are unable to be told apart by your son

In reality...
Your son understands that reality and the internet are two different things.

I was 11 when I started playing TF2, and I'M slightly autistic in a way that would make me MORE imprinted by these things.
I am now 12.
I have not become more violent.
I have not been scarred for life.
I am not a psychopath.
So either you're overreacting, or you simply were not child-savvy enough to understand that even children understand the difference between reality and fantasy.

Oh also, it's fun.  I don't enjoy it solely for the fact that I get to kill.  I enjoy the strategy.  The teamwork.  I appreciate the glory of getting a crocket smack dab in the middle of a horde of enemies.  I LOVE winning.  I can relieve stress.  So stop worrying.  It has no negative attributes to any even slightly normal individual.

There is a "Contact Us" button at the bottom of the page. You can use that, although don't think you should waste their time just to complain about something that isn't even a problem.

The Scratch website doesn't only have like 6-10 year olds, I bet there are older people [like me]. I reconmend monitoring him when hes on misc forums if your worrying that much.

Kthnx.
