Not really, but they do burn in the mouth. It's not the same kind of burn as I get with eating, say, a spicy chili pepper.
Onions contains sulfoxides that turn into acid when in contact with water - the acid isn't enough to kill you, but it does explain why people cry when chopping up an onion, or why most people feel that a piece of raw onion is hot or spicy. ^^

Well, I do go to a school for chemical engineering, I should know a little something about chemicals or my teachers would kill me.
