No, the worlds won't be deleted.
It'll be just like 1.8, where they didn't get deleted, they just kinda glitched up.

They're not even coming out with 1.9. They're just going straight to Minecraft 1.0.
Then why is there a 1.9 Prerelease?
Because that's what Mojang felt like calling it before they decided to make it the official release.

Heard it from a friend, who's never been wrong before.
First of all, friends are almost always wrong.
Second, they are not coming out with 1.9, it's going straight to the release (which you will have to pay ten dollars for if you bought the beta and not alpha) Someone else is wrong... This is a lie. I READ Notch's twitter.
Thirdly, why do you think it's only the mushroom biome that will cause your worlds to stop working?
Fourth-ly, Your 1.8 worlds will still work with 1.9, you just won't get the new stuff spawned in it, like the mushroom biome.
Also, minecraft is coming out the 11th, when Skyrim comes out.Nope. It's coming out on teh 18th.
So many people blabbing untrue info...
Also, there will never be 1.0
1.9 is the full release. Then 1.10. I READ NOTCH'S TWITTER PEOPLE
