What kind of computer should I get?

The computer i have now is 9 years old and is pretty slow. I have a price range of $400-$800

I really don't want to get a mac.

Mac. TOTALLY WORTH IT. I don't care if you said you don't want one.

Either build a custom PC with spare parts...

...or find a reasonable dealer that sells PCs.

I agree. Do you have a desktop? If so, you can just get a Mac Mini and just connect your old keyboard, monitor and mouse  smile

If you want a PC, you might want to build your own  smile

If you like them and they're in your area, then yes.

Yes.

Well, then you can just get a desktop tower. What are the monitor specs?

I was hoping on getting a laptop, and since my tower is a little to big for what you're probably going to say.

What am I gonna say?  tongue

I've given up on trying to make you get a Mac... don't worry  wink

I've had bad experiences with PC laptops... you can get a real nice PC tower in your price range  smile

And what were the monitor specs again?  tongue

Get an Ubuntu if you're a programmer (a Unix-based OS will save you tons of downloads and installations); if not, get a Windows PC (preferably Windows 7).  Don't get a Mac.  They're buggy, freeze up when you're not doing anything, and can't run EXE files.

Re: What kind of computer should I get?

Either buy a cheap Dell HP, or Micro Express PC (good ones here), or if you want to get the most bang for your buck, make your own PC (I would recommend it to be 2nd generation Core i3-based).

Despite what some people in this thread want you to think, your current opinion of Macs is correct. If you want a cheap PC that is decent, DO NOT get a Mac. Macs are overpriced shiny toys. The $500 Mac Mini has about as much power as a $200 Acer netbook.

Re: What kind of computer should I get?

I think you have enough (or probably more than enough) money to get a laptop running on a Windows system. So how about getting a laptop? You can take them anywhere and they use up less energy.  smile
