I'm hoping the computer I'm going to build will be able to run Minecraft. It's going to be running on Ubuntu (I think I have 10.4). Currently, I'm looking for an optical drive and a power supply unit.

Lol.  There's a unix deprivation designed especially for servers.  My server runs that.  wink

Re: How To Build A PC Official Thread

Ah, cool! If you're still looking for a power supply, I highly recommend (in case you don't already know) that you buy something of high quality. It's an important part of your system, and bad things can happen if you buy something cheap. I'd go with Seasonic if you can afford it: their power supplies are second-to-none in terms of consistent output, quality, and reliability.

Now, I'm not really sure why you'd go with the Phenom ii x4 840. It's not truly a Phenom processor by definition: it lacks the L3 cache that defines the line, and has the older Propus die. I'd get the 955 BE if I were you, especially since you can overclock it with that custom cooler.  hmm

I'd also go with the G.skill Ripjaw series for your RAM rather than Corsair's XMS3 just because it's generally considered to be of higher quality and better reliability, but that's more personal preference. (I actually have a set of both in my computer.)

I don't know if you wanted advice, but I guess you got it.  tongue

Re: How To Build A PC Official Thread

Where are you buying this from? You should be going to newegg.com.
Whenever my dad's getting a new computer (he always builds his), we open a bunch of tabs in Firefox and search on Newegg for good parts. And we always throw a version of Windows in too.  smile
And it doesn't end up being really expensive either, even if we're looking for high performance. (I mean, it won't go over, like, $700 or something, or at least certainly not $1000. It's been a while, I can't remember  tongue )

Re: How To Build A PC Official Thread

I want to build a custom laptop, but unfortunately I am unemployed... (I'm only in 8th grade, don't go yelling at me to get off minecraft and get a job XD)(it's kind of hard to make a computer when your budget is under $100)

I want something that can play TF2 and watch FMA on Netflix in top quality at the same time as rendering a movie the size of transformers 2 and all with extremely fast networking and silky smooth framerate
What should I get
Also I only have a budget for under 76850¥

Unless you mean just buying a custom configuration from a manufacturer, you can't build a custom laptop...

well, you can get a barebones laptop, although that's somewhat the same thing you said. anyway, I have an idea using an arduino microcontroller to make a custom OS and everything.

Re: How To Build A PC Official Thread

Cool. My next computer will probably be custom built. That won't be for a while though, because my laptop screams through NFS: Hot Pursuit (2010 remake) at the highest graphical settings (short of 1080p video, the screen is only 1440x900).

It will probably use a 3rd gen Core i7 and whatever higher-end Nvidia GPU I can find for $300.  tongue

@above post: I have a design for a computer using the Parallax Propeller microcontroller and a Z80 or 68k for the graphics. I have also started on the OS for it.

Re: How To Build A PC Official Thread

Well I'm back online now.

@Harkou-I'm only getting that stuff because I'm on a very low budget, but thanks I'll check them out  big_smile .
@Earthboudjeff-I'd first choose if you want to go for AMD or Intel. Your motherboard will determine almost all of the components you choose after it.
@meowmoew55-I'm getting them from Amazon UK. I'll check out that site though  cool .
@fire219-Sounds like an awesome laptop.

Oh and when I get a YouTube account, I'll post some videos about making a computer.

If you want to have a OEM version of Windows 7 Home premium, there is one going at
£80 on amazon. Tech support not included, but it does come with the genuine windows sticker to put on the case.

Thanks, but I'm stick with Ubuntu for now.
