Someone should suggest this to Notch, as a new mob:

A ghost. It could spawn in the end. They would look just like the default character, but slightly transparent and tinted white. They would hover about 1 block above the ground, slowly gliding up and down a little as it "walked" (hovered). When the player is near them they could hear some creepy ghostly music. You could also walk through them, but take damage)

Once night ends instead of burning or staying (burning would be weird, and I think staying would also be slightly strange), they would sort of fade away and at sunset they would sort of fade in. They wouldn't fly, just hover. But they could glide down from a mountain, perhaps.

They couldn't be killed with weapons or anything, since they're ghosts but they start making moaning noises in torch/lava/firelight and begin to die (they wouldn't sort of flash red a bit from damage like most mobs do though).

While they wouldn't usually fly, they could fly up a few blocks to get to the player. That way they could attack the player while he/she is on the platform they spawn on, coming to the End.

They WOULD be able to go through blocks, but if you have light in your house, that shouldn't be a problem. I suppose they would be in the End, but the normal world could be fine too.

Some of my ideas for what Notch could do:

Tar pits. Kills you if you fall into it, but can be collected and used as fuel.
Bees. Nest in random trees, come after you if their tree is broken, but you get honey from the tree as well.
Spears. Could be thrown but wear out over time, unlike bows.

Spears should be made like shovels but with flint at the top, and they should be able to be used in close combat and at long range.
