Are netbooks any good?

Hi guys Mangapenguin here  big_smile
For Christmas or my birthday, i would love a netbook because i can buy one with my own money cuz laptops are way to dear for me to buy and i need one for myself cuz me and my bro always fight over the computer.
I like the look of this particular one link here, http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=acer+aspire+one+happy+10.1+inch+netbook&hl=en&prmd=imvns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1024&bih=653&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tb
I like it cuz its cheap and it has a webcam installed so i can talk to my mates on skype,(when i donwload it) i also like it cuz of the good hard drive. But it says that the memories not that good on netbooks, but is 250gb good enough to save a decent amount of photos, music etc.
Please reply i really need to know, cuz i cant take any more of fighting over the computer!Tell me below thanks alot guys!

Re: Are netbooks any good?

The disk space isn't called memory, it's RAM (RAM indeed stands for Random-access memory), just for the record, and if you think 250gb space is bad, well the hard drive on my PC only holds 14gb. I have no experience regarding netbooks though

Re: Are netbooks any good?

I am typing this on the exact same kind of netbook that you want.
It's really good except for:
Headphone jack doesn't work properly
Wifi often needs a driver restart or being plugged into a power source.
Other than that, it's great.
I recommend Linux Mint for an OS, windows is slow.
Make sure not to delete the recovery partition.

This is a temporary signature. It will exist until I think of something witty.

RAM is the memory a computer operates on, and  Hard disk space is how huch it can save on it when it is off, then retrive later.  Like when you save a file, then open again after you closed it.

250 GB is this:  One bit is one piece of data (0 or 1), and a byte is eight of these "bits".  A byte is a single letter, period, ampersand, tilde, colon, etc.  One thousand bytes is a kilobyte.  This post is probably two or three kilobytes.  One thousand kilobytes is a megabyte, about the size of a small book.  One thousand megabytes is a gigabyte.  A gigabyte is about 10 yards (meters, if you wish) of a bookshelf.  250 gigabytes could hold 57,000 mp3 files, or about 100,000 photographs.  I think that's enough.

Oh, and since Scratch 2.0 will be online in Flash, you can use a netbook.  Just make sure not to get a mac netbook.  They cannot support Flash.

I thought macbook air supported Flash, just not natively...

Anyways, I have an acer aspire one netbook (a D255, very similar to yours).
I find the storage more than enough, and its protability is great for taking around: in the car, in bed, on the sofa, on top of your piano, outside.

The only (big) downside is the extremely poor speed and memory capabilities. It only has 1GB of DDR3 (which is pretty bad for me), and a 1.5GHz CPU. Most programs today recommend 1.66GHz as a minimum speed.

Also the battery life is not always as advertised. Sometimes it drains quicker than you'd think it would, even with low brightness and no sounds. Remember to check the power options.

Oh right well im not bothered about speed as long as its not super slow!!!!!! I just really need it to take with me so im not bored. And i dont mind charging stuff up. If it is true though, it says 8 hours battery life which is good for me cuz its only a little less than my ipod nano  big_smile

Mine hardly had any room for files, I had to keep uninstalling stuff
I'd advise a regular laptop if possible

Macs support flash fully, iPads/iPhones/iPods don't.

Linux FTW

As for the topic, netbooks are typically far less powerful than normal laptops. The fact that they may be "bad" is all based on your perspective. For example, If you like playing games, and that's what you want the primary use of your computer to be, you definitely don't want a netbook. If you want something inexpensive that you are going to do simple things on (like Scratch) and you want it to be super-portable, than a netbook is exactly what you need.

Hope this helps  big_smile

'Is 250 GB any good?'

Are you serious, or is this some sort of joke?  My laptop has a total of half of that!  I don't really know if it's POSSIBLE to reach that (unless you get a bunch of copies of Visual [insert programming language here]; Visual C++ is 4GB!)!

Re: Are netbooks any good?

Also guys, I'm not sure why you're worrying about harddisk space, when I think of buying a computer, that's the last thing I think about, as you can always upgrade it, with external hard disks, or (if you're feeling techy) you can upgrade the one it has in it.

If you're using linux (I suggest ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/) then the 1gb of ram and reasonably slow processor should be fine, as ubuntu isn't as much of a resource hog as windows is.

when chosing computers, it's all about what you want it for, different people have different needs, and for what you need it for, it will easily do.

Just to clarify, macbooks run flash just fine, but they're also horribly expensive and over priced.

Re: Are netbooks any good?

UK ?

Try to find a netbook with a DUAL core ATOM cpu.
No single core Atom.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Atom

And one with a VERY LONG lasting battery, five hours and more.
If the battery life drops 50% over the years, it remains useful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_ion_battery

Non glare screen is a plus  roll
Higher screen resolution is a plus for Scratching.

Extended manufacturer warranty might be helpful.

No mechanical fan is a plus: no moving parts - no noise - no fan failure  smile

Try different price comparison engines  roll
My quick skinflint uk search results for dual core Atom: all below 220 british pounds:

Acer Aspire One D255E
ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM
HP Compaq mini 110-3610sa

Or try to find a used laptop with linux and minimum 512 MB memory under 90 pounds.
Test and Scratch (install, edit, upload)  at least one hour a used machine before you buy, these come often with NO warranty and a defunct battery.
