Recently the developers for blender have been coding a new internal renderer. It's in very early stages at the moment, but I thought you might all be interested to see what you can do with it.
Here's a very quick example, simulating gold. I rendered it for around 2 hours.

The difference with this new renderer, is that it is constantly updating. You could set the path tracing samples to any number, and it would keep on simulating. I have discovered (for this scene at least) that it requires about 3500 PTS for a good result, I used about 6000. I haven't fully experimented with it yet, but one thing I do know, is that it's very buggy, especially when rendering using the GPU.

This is what happens when you don't use many PTS, in this example, I used about 10. It's very noisy, and doesn't look very realistic.
