We recently changed the names of the 'Top Loved' and 'Top Viewed' rows on the Scratch Homepage to "What the community is loving" and "What the community is viewing."  We made these changes because we want the names to reflect the community spirit of the Scratch Website.

Right now these rows function in the same way as they always have. Why change the name? Some people in the Scratch Team felt that "Tops" puts too much emphasis on competition. It's fine that many Scratchers like to compete, often this leads to really cool projects. But we don't want to give the impression that the goal of participating in the Scratch community is to make it to the top loved / viewed slots. We think people like to Scratch because it's fun to make cool stuff and share it with others in the community. So we want these rows to indicate what's going on in the community lately rather than what projects are in the "tops."

i suppose thats pretty resonable. were can you find the most popular projects?

Yeah, I agree, even though I am probably the main culprit for the competition.

Re: Explanation for changes to "Top Loved", "Top Viewed" rows

One thing. I've noticed that some 'popular' users (not giving names) have been on the front page for more then 3 days or even more. It would be nice it the Scratch team could monitor the front page projects, this would also block out the rare inappropriate projects. It really bugs me, those slots for projects more then 3 days on the front page could be showing another fairly popular project.

I agree, it would be nice if the front page showed more projects. But the system automatically picks projects, so the Scratch Team isn't hand-picking which ones to give front page for more or less time, so there's no direct solution that would be best in every situation. If you have a good idea, you can always post a suggestion on the Suggestions forum  smile .

As for inappropriate projects, it's the same as the above. Simply if you see an inappropriate project, you should flag it as inappropriate, and hopefully it will be removed soon. The Scratch Team isn't just reviewing each project submission individually, so they can't guarantee that there won't be any projects in Newest Projects with inappropriate material. What they do instead is work on the system to automatically remove most of the inappropriate projects based on keywords, and review reports by users that are given when users click "Flag as inappropriate".

Hopefully this clears some things up  smile

This could be a nice suggestion - consider posting it on the suggestions page.
I think a 3 day limit would make room for more interesting projects on the front page.

Re: Explanation for changes to "Top Loved", "Top Viewed" rows

The problem is, the four day limit is well and good to get them off fast, but nobody else can get the views that fast besides more popular users, no matter how worthy it is.

I'm glad to think that the community will always be kind and helpful, the language will always be a fun and easy way to be introduced into programming, the motto will always be: Imagine, Program, Share - Nomolos

I agree. maybe it can be up for a week to get on the front page, but can only stay on for 3 days. That will make sure more people have a shot at the front page.
And also, how about after you get on the front page once, you have to wait a day or two to get on again. This is kinda complicated because some people argue that "famous" people have good projects and deserve to be on the front page. I partly agree, but other users that are not "famous" have just as complicated and clever projects too that also deserve to get on the front page.

Here's a clickable link for conveniency.  wink  --> Surpise Projects
And, yes, the surprise projects are still on Scratch. It's just when you log in; the part is gone for a strange reason. Hope this helps!

Um, yeah, like 4.5 years later, it's still a competition.
