Phantom of the Opera: 25th Anniversary

If you didn't know, the London cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera broadcast their special 25th Anniversary preformance of the musical live to movie theaters around the world on Sunday! (Some theaters are re-showing it later if you want to catch it and it's gonna be on DVD).

IT. WAS. AMAZING.
At the end, Andrew Lloyd Webber came out  yikes  AND then the entire original cast of PotO (minus a few who had died...)

THEN... O.M.G
The original Christine Daee, Sarah Brightman, came out and sang The Phantom of the Opera.... with FOUR other people who have played the Phantom in proffesional productions.  yikes  Michael Crawford also came... but he didn't sing.  mad

My only comlaints (apart from the lack of The Original Phantom not singing) were:

1) Where was the Mirror Bride? That's the reason she faints....
http://images.nymag.com/listings/theater/2phantooftheopera.jpg
And then it just seems like Eric (the Phantom for those of you who have not read the book) got a wedding dress from some random place -_-

2) The chandelier DID. NOT. FALL.  mad

So, discussify.  smile

Wow, sounds great!  I've read the book but never seen the musical.  However, I own the musical soundtrack and pretty much have it memorized.  It's awesome.

Yeah, it is some awesome music  big_smile  My favorite song is (apart from the title song  tongue  ) probably "Masquerade" though I've had "Notes" stuck in my head for a few days. And my mananger started singing "Past the Point of No Return" the other day XD

I've read the book too... It's pretty different. I mean the important parts are the same... there's just some different stuff.
Examples:
Johseph Buret (? The props guy) dies later in the story rather than in the very beginning.

The Persian (for those of you who haven't read the book- that's the only name he's really known by) isn't the one to take Raoul down to the Phantom's lair- Madame Giry does (but only half-way).

We don't get the Phantom's name in the musical (Eric). Not much of his back story either...

Raoul's brother doesn't make an appearance.

Maybe you'll get to see it when it comes out on DVD on November 14th  big_smile  (I'll probably wind up getting the soundtrack to the 25th Anniversary just for the 4 Phantoms and Christine ^^ )

Thought it's going to be over $30 0_o

I was dissapointed that they don't have the 25th Anniversary soundtrack on iTunes yet... Maybe once it actually comes out (not pre-order) they will.

I want "Phantom of the Opera" sung by Sarah Brightman and the Four Phantoms so bad 0_o

Aww... Hopefully you'll have the time soon! (PS- wait until the DVD of the 25 anniversary performance comes out. The movie was ok- but the musical is MUCH better!)

Basic Plot Summary (spoilers):

At the Opera Populaire (late 1800s in Paris) there is a long-standing story of the Phantom of the Opera. Lately, he's been much more acitve- endangering the Opera's primma donna Carlotta. When a curtain nearly falls on her when she is singing an aria from the upcoming production of Hannibal for the two new manangers of the Opera, she storms out. At the recomendation of the ballet teacher (Madame Giry) Christine Daae performs Carlotta's part ("Think of Me Fondly"). After the performance that night, Madame Giry tells Christine that "he" (meaning the Phantom) will be pleased. Christine then tells her friend Meg about how she is getting lessons from the "Angel of Music." Her childhood friend Raoul saw her performance and comes to invite her for dinner, but she refuses saying that the Angel of Music is very strict. He disregards that and leaves to let her get ready. But before she can go, a voice (who she thinks is the Angel of Music) is heard in her room. She apologises for thinking about going out with Raoul and asks for the Angel to show himself. He reveals himself from behind her mirror which opens. Beckoning her to follow him, Christine enters the labryinth and the mirror closes behind them, leaving a very confused Raoul ("Angel of Music/ Little Lotte [The Mirror]"). After they arrive at his lair ("Phantom of the Opera" [by this point we know that he's not an angel of music- it's the Phantom) he sings to her ("Music of the Night"). She faints (because he's a little bit of a creep and built a life-size doll of her wearing a wedding dress) and wakes up the next morning in his lair. Wondering who the "man behind the mask" is, she sneaks up behind him and takes off his mask, revealing to her (not the audience yet) the disfigurment of his face ("I Remember/ Stranger Than You Dreamt It"). After she gives him back his mask (and the song) they return to the Opera house. In the new mananger's office, the manangers have received several notes (along with other people involved like Carlotta and Raoul) about how the Opera Ghost is unhappy with them ("Notes/ Primma Donna). When Carlotta sings the part that the Phantom wanted Christine to sing, she winds up "croaking" (not dying- like a frog or toad). When she realizes she can't sing the part, they put Christine in her place. But during the Ballet used to fill time while she is getting in her costume, the Phantom runs into Johspeh Bruqet. Not wanting anyone to see him and live, (though I think there may be other reasons but IDK what because you only really see this through some shadows on the background of the ballet scene) the Phantom hangs him. People freak out. ("Poor Fool He Makes Me Laugh") Christine takes Raoul up to the roof where they will be safe ("Why Have You Brought Me Here?/ I've Been There..."). She asks him to protect her and love her ("That's All I Ask of You"). The Phantom overhears and he's very sad that the love of his life (Christine) loves another... Then he gets really mad at Christine and Raoul and drops a chandelier on them ("All I Ask of You Reprise").

End Act One. Let me know if you want Act Two.

TL;DR and/or no spoilers:

Christine, a singer at a Paris Opera House, is the object of the infamous Phantom of the Opera's love. But she loves another. The Phantom is not happy about that...

Yup, it's one of my favorites  big_smile
I'm getting a Phantom mask soon :3 And I'm considering writing a "Phan" (lol) letter to the guy who played the Phantom/ Erik at the Broadway show I went to.

I'm such a Phangirl  tongue

(Yes, I am over-using that pun)

And the guys who play Raoul and Phantom are hilarious  lol

imnotbob wrote:

The Mirror Bride is the whole reason why Christine faints when the Phantom takes her down to his lair. It's basically a life-size mannequin that looks exactly like Christine... in a wedding dress. (He's just a little obsessed  tongue ) Since they didn't have the Mirror Bride, she basically faints for no real reason... and it seems like the Phantom got a wedding dress from some random place during Final Lair.

The chandelier is like.... the iconic moment of the musical. And book. And 2004 movie. (Can't speak for the other movies- haven't seen them). Many lines stem from it, so it's kinda crucial.

"Lot 666 then ladies and gentelmen. A chandelier in pieces. We are told, ladies and gentelmen that this is the very chandelier that figures in the famous disaster of the Phantom of the Opera: a mystery never fully explained." ~ Prolouge

"Behold! She's singing to bring down the chandelier!" ~ "Poor Fool he makes me laugh" (Phantom)

"... and a new chandelier!" ~ "Masquerade"

So yeah....

John Owen Jones and Killian Donnelly need an award.

In case you are now making a 0_o face now.... They play Phantom (John) and Raoul (Killian) in the London production. They decided to have a mini-Twitter war where they each set a challenge of random pictures to take. Today was how-many-pieces-of-costumes-can-you-put-on-that-aren't-your-own. Hence Killian in Christine's wig  lol

But the Director who was going to judge today's contest has dissapeared...  yikes

and at the same time  lol
