Probably not, but if you want to get into computer programming it certainly is a good start.

Hi, I am Archmage coder extraordinaire. I do Scratch, pascal, java, php, html, AS2 and AS3. Leave me a message if you want coding advice. Also check out my personal website, lots of good stuff about web development, Flash, and Scratch (v1 and v2) !

Re: Animation career

I don't see why not... I was recently reading the dated but still good tutorial: So You Want To Be A Pixel Artist? (http://petesqbsite.com/sections/tutorials/tuts/tsugumo/default.htm) and it struck me that whatever your interests are, the tools you use won't make much of a difference as long as you keep progressing and improving yourself. In that sense, Scratch might be an excellent starting point to test yourself until you find something more advanced.

Good luck!

Re: Animation career

zacky, I'd say you should try Scratch to do some animations. Scratch is free and it wouldn't hurt to learn some programming if you are interested in a career in animation.

Re: Animation career

Well ya, I want to be a video game programmer so this is the program that I use for learning but for animation . . . . . well you probaly know that it is not as easy to draw on the computer as on paper so not exactly. Also you can't make too big animations because if you put too many costumes you can't see it on the internet but if you download it it is fine so not as good. So what I am saying is probably no.But if you want you can make big videos with sprited moving.

Re: Animation career

Actually I think this is a great program for learning how to do animation.  It's simple enough that you can get your storyboards right and learn how to do the basic move animations without getting bogged down in tons of obscure computer detail.

Flash is probably the next step up - and even many of the programs for it try to avoid Action Script.  Eventually you may have to learn a more powerful computer program - but this is a very good place to start.

And don't think you need a computer to do good animation.  One of the best animations I've seen recently (at a local film festival) was entirely hand drawn - with markers - and photographed frame by frame.  The story, the quality of the artwork and the overall flow are much more important than how they were achieved.
