Alligator clips short circuited?

Hi all,

I’m trying to make my first project with a Scratchboard, and I’ve run into a problem I don’t know how to deal with. It seems that two of the four alligator clips are short circuited: no matter what port I connect them to, the resistance drops to 0 even though they make no contact; this of course makes them useless. I have quite some experience with programming, but electronics is new to me and I’d appreciate it if someone could help me out with this.

Re: Alligator clips short circuited?

Hi inf7w,

We are glad that you are experimenting with your Scratch Board. It's unfortunate that yours might have a problem. If you don't mind taking a close-up digital photo of your Scratch Board and emailing it to scratchboard at media.mit.edu, the Scratch Board team can take a look for any possible defects in the circuit routing. If we notice a manufacturing error on your board, then we can replace it.

Happy Scratching

Re: Alligator clips short circuited?

Thanks, I already solved the problem and there's nothing wrong with the Scratchboard. As a novice in electronics, I overlooked the fact that in the alligator clip pair, the two clips are not the same as far as the electric current is concerned. After some experimenting and connecting them either this way or the opposite way, I figured a configuration that works. And that brings me to the next question: both clips look the same, so how to determine which is which?
