So, I was reading through my science book a week or two ago, and I had a brilliant (in my very humble opinion) idea for a story! So the idea is:
Energy runs out. All energy. It just stops. Well, almost all energy. Kinetic energy in people and objects still exists, as well as light energy and maybe a few others. But other things, like electricity, just runs out. Stops. Disappears.
Water stops, the wind stops, thermal energy etc.
What do you think?

Cool! For some reason when I heard the title, it reminded me of City of Ember, but I guess it's different.
Interesting concept, it sounds like something I'd read

Impossible. Have you ever taken science at all? Everything counts as energy. You can't move without energy, you can't make sounds. Energy can't be created or destroyed. I don't read science fiction that doesn't make an ounce of sense.

I did say almost all energy stops, right? And it makes just as much sense as all humans suddenly getting a rubbish version of immortality.

You'll need to think of a cool story to explain where all of the energy went.
Energy never vanishes, it just passes into different forms.

I suppose a better way of describing it would be that it freezes, rather than runs out.

No it doesn't. You don't understand energy I'm guessing. Wave your hand in front of you. Then let it drop onto the table. You've just demonstrated 4 types of energy. Some can't just stop and the other continues. That's physically impossible.

Kinetic, potential, gravitational, and thermal?
As I said, kinetic energy in humans still works, thermal energy just doesn't changes, gravity still works, and potential energy is fine because it's only potential.

"Gravitational" energy is gravity potential. The 4th energy was Sound. But that still doesn't make sense.

Fine, sound. But it does make sense. You're just not thinking fourth dimensionally!

This is the most hilarious thread I've seen in a while.
First of all, calebxy, as I understand it, you're close to reciting the Second law of thermodynamics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_law … modynamics). Note that I said close, since:
1. Energy does not disappear.
2. Energy does not appear.
The concept that you're imagining is all energy becoming equal (even out), which is entropy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy). It seemed like you weren't entirely sure what you're talking about when you said "almost all", kept using the word "stops" and later on said that energy "freezes" - that's just ridiculous.
Second, some of your attempts at classifying energy were wrong aswell:
-Gravitational energy is (indeed) potential.
-Both kinetic and potential energy are mechanical energy.
-There are more than 4 types of energy, thus sound isn't the "4th". Sound energy does indeed exist, though.
I'm not going to recite all 10+ types of energy, because you could easily think of more than 4 in a snap.
Third and final:
But it does make sense. You're just not thinking fourth dimensionally!
Hahaha oh wow, I hope this is a joke.

It's only ridiculous if there isn't an explanation for it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Ok, glad we got that cleared up.
-My science book calls them kinetic energy and potential energy, so that's what I call them.
-I never said that sound energy was the "4th". I was saying that that was the fourth type of energy that is demonstrated when you do what Andres-Vander said.

Yes, that was a joke.

All you guys that are talking about how unscientific it is. Just, stop. Its a book idea about a fictional world/story. Of course this doesn't even make sense irl, but maybe it would make sense in the book. So lets just stop arguing about science.

Why do you think that? And thank you.

Whats your reason for the energy running out?

I...err...haven't thought of that yet, but I will do!

I could try to explain it, but it'd be easier probably just to ask a teacher or if your brave enough, try wikipedia.

I don't have teachers, remember?
