So we have this old old laptop wit h3.06ghz single core mobile pentium 4.

It has 256mb of RAM installed but system information says it only has 192mb...

Solutions anyone?  smile

Re: RAM problem on XP

Buy more REM.

You can see detailed instructions in the "How to make your computer (almost) never crash!" thread.

REM is Rapid Eye Movement.

Do you wanna buy some of that?

You can.  There are drugs which induce deep sleep and REM.

Re: RAM problem on XP

REM sleep is when you have vivid dreams. As to your RAM, here's the problem: It's old. I'm guessing it's at least a year old, so when that ram is being used, some of it burns out. Especially if it's a laptop which can easily overheat or gets moved around a lot. Either that or not all the RAM is allocated to the operating system you're using. If that's the case, there's a way to fully allocate it, either through the boot menu (dangerous to make a mistake) or through some other thing, maybe the system registry.

Re: RAM problem on XP

RAM isn't installed. Also, the processor and the RAM of a computer aren't that much related.

Also thank god it's an old laptop, you won't go anywhere with 256Mb these days.

Re: RAM problem on XP

I would say that the missing 64mb is dedicated to the on-board graphics unit. (The only exception would be if it had dedicated Sideport memory or an entire discreet card, which I doubt given the age and specs of that laptop.)

It's an old computer and I'm not going to pay to upgrade it  smile

Look up installing RAM in laptop or Desktop.

I have a feeling you'd buy an actual thumb (flash) drive and not RAM sticks.
