What do commercial people take us for, stupid? Yes.
Do they expect us to think that just because we see 9's and not whole numbers make us buy it? Yes.
Do we? Yes.
I think it's not bad that people save a cent, but really. Makes America look dumb.
Another note:
If you say, hey 9.99 is a good price for a pillow pet!
Shipping and handling is a little bit MORE than the actual thing.
Discuss plain stupid commercial bargains.

Why do your answer your own rhetorical questions?
Also it's their job to sell you something; they're going to try to do it any way they can.

Britain is just as bad. I was walking through a supermarket and they made an "offer" which was 99 pence more than the original item.

There's a reason why everything seems to end with 99 cents. It's so if something is, say, $19.99, the company selling it can advertise it as under $20. It's cheap, but sadly that's how it works.

That's a $80 value for only 4 easy payments of $19.99!

Maybe it was a mistake.

Actually in that sense, they are right and you are stupid. Because even though you cognitively think that it's 20$, your subconscious mind will see it as a lower price if 19.99 is compared to 20$

There's a show called 'Watchdog' to let the public know about rip offs and dodgy offers, and it sometimes shows special offers where the price is higher!
